AirPrint Not Working? How to Fix It on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

AirPrint is supposed to be the "it just works" way to print from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, with no drivers or apps required. So when it suddenly stops working, it's especially frustrating because there's rarely an error message to point you in the right direction. Below are the fixes that resolve AirPrint problems most often, in the order we'd try them ourselves. This guide is part of our full Printer Troubleshooting Center.

The Short Answer

Most AirPrint failures come down to one of three things: your device and printer aren't actually on the same Wi-Fi network, the printer isn't AirPrint-certified in the first place, or a stuck print queue is silently blocking new jobs. Start with the network check below, then work down the list.

1. Confirm Your Device Is on the Same Network as the Printer

AirPrint only works when your device and printer share the same Wi-Fi network, not just the same router in a split "guest" and "main" network setup. Open Settings > Wi-Fi on your iPhone or iPad, or the Wi-Fi menu on your Mac, and check the network name against the one shown on your printer's control panel or network configuration page.

  • Turn off cellular data temporarily in case your iPhone is quietly using it instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Disable any active VPN, since a VPN can route your device's traffic away from the local network the printer is on.
  • Check for a guest network since some routers isolate guest devices from each other, which blocks AirPrint discovery even though both devices show as connected.

2. Make Sure Your Printer Actually Supports AirPrint

Not every printer is AirPrint-certified, and if yours isn't, no amount of troubleshooting will make it appear as an option. Apple maintains an official list of AirPrint-enabled printers you can check by brand and model on its official AirPrint support page. 3. Restart Everything, in This Order

A full restart clears out more AirPrint issues than any other single fix, and the order matters because each device needs to rediscover the next one.

  • Restart your router first, and give it a full minute to fully come back online.
  • Restart your printer next, using the power button rather than just letting it sleep.
  • Restart your iPhone, iPad, or Mac last, so it re-scans the network fresh.

4. Check for a Stuck Print Queue on Mac

On a Mac, a single failed job can sit in the queue and quietly block everything behind it. Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and open its print queue. Cancel any job showing an error or one that's been sitting for a while, then try printing again. 5. Reset the Printing System (Mac Only)

If jobs keep failing no matter what, resetting the printing system wipes out every saved printer and queue on your Mac so you can start clean. In System Settings, right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset printing system. You'll need to add your printer again afterward, which often fixes AirPrint connections that have become corrupted over time.

6. Update Your Printer's Firmware

Manufacturers periodically patch AirPrint compatibility issues through firmware updates. Check your printer's control panel menu, often under Setup or Network, for an update option, or check the manufacturer's support site for your exact model.

7. Turn Off Private Wi-Fi Address (iPhone/iPad)

iOS's Private Wi-Fi Address feature can occasionally interfere with local device discovery. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the info icon next to your network, and toggle off Private Address. Reconnect to the network and try printing again.
