Printer Making a Grinding, Clicking or Squeaking Noise? What Each Sound Means

Printers are full of gears, belts, rollers and stepper motors, and they all make noise. The trick is telling the noises that mean "working normally" from the noises that mean "about to break". This guide works through it by sound: what each one usually is, how to confirm it, and what to do — including the ones where the right answer is to stop immediately and unplug.
First: What Is Normal
Before diagnosing anything, know what a healthy printer sounds like, because a lot of alarming noises are entirely routine.
- A burst of clicking and whirring at power-on. The printer is homing the carriage or drum, checking sensors and finding its zero positions. Ten to thirty seconds is normal.
- Sucking or pumping sounds on an inkjet. That is the maintenance station priming the printhead and drawing ink through the nozzles.
- Noise when idle, hours after the last job. Inkjets run automatic head-cleaning and ink-circulation cycles on a schedule to stop nozzles drying. Annoying at 3 a.m., but it is what keeps the printhead alive. Most models let you shift the timing but not disable it — and disabling it, where possible, is a false economy that leads to clogs.
- A low hum or fan noise for a few minutes after a job. Laser printers run a cooling fan after the fuser has been at 200 °C.
- A distinct thunk when a job starts. A clutch engaging to drive the pickup roller.
The rule of thumb: a noise that has always been there, happens at a predictable moment, and does not produce an error is almost certainly normal. A noise that is new, or that is getting worse, is what this guide is for.

Stop-Now Noises: Grinding and Ratcheting
These two deserve a section of their own, because continuing to print through them is how a cheap fix becomes an expensive one. Gear teeth are nylon. Once they strip, that gear is finished, and gears are rarely sold individually for consumer machines.
Do this, in order:
- Cancel the job and power off at the wall. Not standby — fully off and unplugged.
- Open every access door and look with a torch. You are hunting for paper scraps, staples, paper clips, coins, pen caps — the same offenders behind phantom paper jams, a pet's toy, or on inkjets a stray cartridge that has come loose.
- On an inkjet, slide the carriage by hand from one end to the other. It should move smoothly with light, even resistance. Grittiness, a catch at one point, or a hard stop means an obstruction or a dry carriage rail.
- On a laser, remove the toner and drum assembly and look into the cavity. Check for loose toner, torn paper wrapped around a roller, or the shipping lock and orange tape if the machine is new.
- Look at the gear train where it is visible — usually behind a side panel or through the toner cavity. Missing or chewed teeth are visible to the naked eye and leave a distinctive nylon dust.
- Reassemble, plug in, and run one page. If the grinding is gone, you found it. If it is unchanged and nothing was in the path, a gear or clutch has failed internally.

The Inkjet Carriage Rail
One genuinely common and genuinely fixable cause of grinding and squealing on inkjets: the metal rail the printhead carriage slides along has dried out. From the factory it carries a thin film of grease; over years it collects paper dust and the grease migrates away, and the carriage starts to drag.
The fix is a wipe with a dry, lint-free cloth along the rail to remove the gritty residue. A drop — genuinely one drop — of light machine oil or white lithium grease on the rail, then work the carriage back and forth by hand to spread it. Do not use WD-40, which is a solvent and will strip what lubricant remains. Do not oil the toothed belt, the encoder strip (the translucent plastic ribbon behind the carriage) or anything else. Over-oiling attracts dust and makes the problem worse in six months.
Do Not Clean the Encoder Strip With Anything Wet
Worth its own warning. That thin translucent strip running the width of the printer behind the carriage is how the printer knows where the printhead is. It is printed with fine markings. Wipe it with alcohol or a solvent and you remove the markings, and the printer will never print correctly again. If it has ink on it, a dry lint-free cloth drawn gently along its length is the only safe approach.
Squealing and Squeaking
On a laser printer, a squeal that rises with printing speed is usually the fuser. Fuser bearings run hot and dry out, and the noise typically arrives months before the fuser actually fails — so it is a useful early warning rather than an emergency. If the squeal is accompanied by any quality problem (uneven fusing, toner rubbing off, ghosting), the fuser is on its way out and is worth replacing — often as part of a maintenance kit with the transfer roller and feed rollers.
On both types, a rhythmic squeak that happens once per revolution can be traced the same way you trace a repeating print defect: note how often it occurs relative to the page moving through, and that tells you roughly which roller. If a roller squeaks and the prints are clean, cleaning it with a water-dampened lint-free cloth sometimes helps — dust between a roller and its bushing is a common cause.

Fans and Whines
A constant high-pitched whine that continues when the printer is idle is nearly always a fan bearing. It is not dangerous in the short term, but a failed fan on a laser printer means the fuser area does not cool properly, and thermal protection will eventually shut the machine down mid-job.
You can usually locate it by ear with a cardboard tube held to the vents. Fans are inexpensive and, on many office machines, are a customer-replaceable module. On a consumer inkjet, a whining fan is generally the point at which the machine is not worth opening.
Less commonly, a whine comes from the high-voltage power supply on a laser printer — a thin electrical whine that changes pitch with what is being printed rather than staying constant. If it is accompanied by print-quality problems that survive a toner and drum change, that is a supply problem and effectively end-of-life on a consumer machine.
Noise When Nothing Is Printing
This drives people mad, particularly with a printer in a bedroom or home office.
Inkjets run automatic maintenance to keep the nozzles wet. The cycle typically runs every few days, and also every time the printer wakes from a deep sleep or is switched on. It is not a fault. Your options:
- Leave it plugged in and powered on. Counterintuitively, a printer left on runs fewer full cleaning cycles than one switched off and on repeatedly, because power-on triggers a cycle. It also uses less ink overall.
- Adjust the sleep timer rather than the maintenance schedule. A longer delay before deep sleep means fewer wake cycles.
- Turn off "quiet mode" if noise got worse. Quiet mode slows the carriage, which changes the character of the noise but lengthens every job — some people find the longer duration more irritating than the volume. If jobs already feel slow, these are the real causes of a slow printer.
- Do not disable maintenance on models that allow it. Dried nozzles cost far more than a few seconds of noise, and unclogging a printhead is a much bigger job than tolerating a pump.
Laser printers are quieter when idle but will run the fuser and fan briefly on wake. A laser making noise with the lid closed and no job queued is usually running a calibration cycle — color lasers do this regularly to keep registration accurate.
Reducing Normal Printer Noise
If nothing is broken and the printer is simply loud, these actually help:
- Put it on a solid, level surface. A printer on a hollow desk or a flexible shelf turns the furniture into a soundboard. A dense mat — a rubber anti-vibration pad or even a folded towel under the feet — makes a measurable difference.
- Enable quiet mode if your model has one. It slows the carriage and reduces peak noise at the cost of speed.
- Do not push it against a wall. Reflected noise plus restricted airflow makes the fan work harder.
- Check the paper. Damp or curled paper makes a rougher, louder trip through the path — storing paper properly fixes more than people expect.
- Clean the rollers twice a year. Glazed rollers slip and chirp — the roller-cleaning method is five minutes with a damp lint-free cloth.
When to Stop Fixing
The honest line: noise that comes with an error message, a quality defect or a failure to feed is worth chasing. Noise on its own, on a machine that still prints correctly, usually is not — particularly on a consumer inkjet where a gear replacement means a full teardown.

Does a compatible cartridge make a printer noisier?
It should not. A cartridge that does not seat correctly can rattle or cause the carriage to strike it, so if a noise started the moment you installed a new cartridge — of any brand — take it out, check nothing is obstructing the seat, and reinstall it firmly. If the noise follows the cartridge, it is the cartridge; if it stays with the old one back in, it is coincidence.
