Printer Won't Pick Up Paper? How to Fix Feed Rollers and Paper Feeding Problems

Why Rollers Stop Gripping
The pickup roller is a rubber wheel that presses down on the top sheet and rolls it forward. It works through friction, and friction is the first thing to go.
Three things kill it. Paper dust builds up as a fine powder that fills the rubber's texture and turns a grippy matte surface into a slick one. Age hardens the rubber — the plasticizers that keep it soft evaporate over years, and a hard roller cannot deform enough to grip. And the wrong cleaner finishes the job: alcohol, contact cleaner and most household sprays strip the rubber and accelerate glazing, which is why a printer often feeds beautifully for a week after an alcohol wipe and then gets permanently worse.
The visual test is simple. A healthy roller looks matte and slightly textured, like a pencil eraser. A glazed one looks shiny, almost polished. If you can see the overhead light reflecting off it, that is your fault.
How to Clean Feed Rollers Properly
This fixes the majority of feeding problems and takes about five minutes.
- Power off and unplug at the wall. The rollers can turn under power and your fingers will be in the path.
- Remove the paper tray completely and take all the paper out. On most inkjets the pickup roller is visible through the empty tray cavity, on the underside of the housing above. On laser printers it is usually a gray or black rubber half-moon roller reachable from the tray opening or behind the front cover.
- Dampen a lint-free cloth with plain water. Not alcohol, not IPA, not window cleaner. Wring it out until it is barely damp — you want no drips inside the machine.
- Wipe with firm pressure, rotating the roller by hand so you clean the whole circumference. You should see gray-brown paper residue transfer to the cloth. Keep going until nothing more comes off, moving to a clean part of the cloth as you go.
- Do the separation pad too. This is the small spring-loaded rubber or cork pad sitting opposite the roller, usually in the floor of the tray or on a hinged flap. It stops the second sheet coming along for the ride. Wipe it the same way.
- Let it dry two to three minutes. A damp roller slips worse than a dirty one.
- Reload correctly: fan the stack, square it on a flat surface, load no more than 80% of the tray, and set the guides so they just touch the edges without squeezing.
- Test with five pages. One page proves nothing; a feed fault that is 80% fixed will still show up over five.
If cleaning improves things but does not fix them, the rubber has hardened and cleaning will not bring it back. Skip to replacing the roller.
The Rubber-Restorer Trick, and Why We Do Not Recommend It
You will find advice online to wipe rollers with rubber rejuvenator, brake cleaner, or to sand them lightly with fine-grit paper. Sanding does work briefly — it exposes fresh rubber — but it removes material from a part machined to a tolerance, and it leaves a rough surface that sheds particles into the paper path. Rejuvenator fluids swell the rubber temporarily and leave a residue that attracts more dust. Both buy you a few hundred pages and make the eventual replacement messier. A roller kit costs less than a set of cartridges on most machines.
Multi-Feeds: When It Pulls Two or Three Sheets at Once
This is the opposite fault and it has its own causes. The pickup roller is doing its job; the separation mechanism is not doing its job of holding the second sheet back.
- Tray overfilled. Above the fill line the stack presses up hard enough that the roller cannot isolate the top sheet. Take a third of the paper out.
- Paper stuck together by static or humidity. Fan the stack properly — hold it at one end and riffle the other with your thumb, then do the same from the opposite end.
- Worn separation pad. The pad glazes exactly like the roller. Clean it; if it is shiny and the corners are rounded, replace it. Pads are usually a couple of dollars.
- Topping up instead of reloading. Adding fresh sheets on top of old ones creates a boundary where the sheets stick. Remove what is left, put new paper underneath, fan the combined stack, reload as one.

Crooked and Skewed Feeding
If the page comes out with the text at an angle, the sheet entered the path crooked. Work through these:
- Guides. They should touch both edges of the stack with no gap and no compression. A gap of even 2 mm lets the leading edge cock sideways.
- Stack squared. Tap the stack on a flat surface on two adjacent edges before loading.
- Printer level. A printer on a soft surface, a rug, or a shelf with a slight lean feeds crooked. Put a level on it if you are unsure.
- One-sided roller wear. Many printers have two pickup rollers on a shared shaft. If one is worn and the other is not, the sheet is pulled harder on one side. Compare them visually; replace as a pair.
- Something in the path. A scrap of paper or a label residue on one side of the path will steer every sheet the same way. Shine a torch through from both ends.

Phantom "Out of Paper" With a Full Tray
The printer is not lying — its sensor genuinely is not being triggered. Common reasons: the stack is too small for the sensor arm to reach (add paper), the plastic sensor flag is stuck down or has lost its spring, the tray is not pushed fully home, or paper dust has coated the optical sensor eye. Brand-Specific Notes
HP
On DeskJet and ENVY models the pickup roller sits above the input tray and is reachable by removing the tray and looking up into the cavity — it is often easier to see with the printer tipped gently back. HP LaserJets use a half-moon pickup roller plus a separation pad in the tray floor; both are user-replaceable on most models and HP publishes the part numbers. Many HP models also have a built-in cleaning routine: look for "Clean Pickup Roller" or a paper-path cleaning page under Tools or Maintenance on the control panel, or in HP Smart.
One HP-specific quirk: if the printer picks up fine from the main tray but not the photo tray (or vice versa), the tray-selection setting in the driver is overriding your choice. Check the paper source setting before assuming a mechanical fault.
Canon PIXMA
Canon inkjets frequently have both a rear vertical feed and a front cassette, and they fail independently. If the rear tray will not pick up, the roller is reachable from the top with the tray extended. Canon also ships a "Roller Cleaning" utility in the printer maintenance menu that spins the rollers against a blank sheet — run it three times, it is genuinely effective on light glazing. Support code 1000 means no paper in the rear tray, 1003 means no paper in the cassette; if you see the code for a tray that has paper in it, that is a sensor or pickup issue, not an empty tray.
Epson
Epson's path is short, and on most WorkForce and EcoTank models the pickup roller is at the back of the cassette and easiest to reach by removing the cassette and looking in with a torch. Epson also uses a separation roller rather than a pad on many models — a small rubber wheel that spins backwards. Clean both. Epson's control panel offers a "Paper Guide Cleaning" function that pulls a plain sheet through to scrub the path; it helps with residue but will not fix a glazed pickup roller.
Brother
Brother lasers are among the easiest to service. The separation pad is in the paper tray itself — pull the tray out, look at the far end, and you will see a small rubber pad on a spring. Brother's manuals explicitly instruct you to clean it with a water-dampened cloth, and replacement pads and pickup rollers are cheap and widely available. On MFC models, if the flatbed feeds fine but the ADF does not, that is a separate set of ADF rollers with its own separation pad.
When to Replace the Roller Kit
Replace rather than clean when: the rubber is visibly shiny after a thorough clean; you can see flat spots; cleaning restores feeding for a few days and then it degrades again; or the printer has passed roughly 50,000 pages, which is the typical rated life of a consumer pickup roller.
Most kits include the pickup roller, separation pad and sometimes a feed roller, and cost between $10 and $30 for common models. On a laser printer these are sometimes bundled into the maintenance kit along with the fuser and transfer roller, which is worth checking before buying parts separately — if the machine is near its maintenance-kit interval anyway, doing the whole kit at once saves opening it twice.
The honest cost calculation: on a sub-$100 inkjet, a roller kit plus an hour of your time is close to what the printer is worth, and the rest of the machine is the same age. On a laser printer over $300, replacing rollers is straightforwardly worth it — the engine typically has hundreds of thousands of pages left. The Workaround While You Wait for Parts
If you need to print today and the tray will not pick up, use the manual feed or rear single-sheet slot if your printer has one — it bypasses the pickup roller entirely and uses a different set of rollers. Feed one sheet at a time, pushing it in until you feel the rollers take it. It is slow, but it works, and it confirms the fault is in the tray pickup mechanism rather than further along the path.

Glazed rollers, almost always. The failure is gradual until it crosses a threshold and then it looks sudden. Clean them with a water-dampened lint-free cloth; if that gives you a few good days and then it returns, the rubber has hardened and needs replacing.
Can I use rubbing alcohol to clean printer rollers?
You can, and it will work brilliantly once, and then the roller will glaze faster than before. Alcohol dries out rubber. Plain water on a lint-free cloth is what the manufacturers' own service manuals specify. If you have already used alcohol, just switch to water going forward — the damage is not instant.
My printer grabs several sheets at once. Is that the same problem?
Related but not the same. Multi-feeding is a separation-pad problem, not a pickup-roller problem. Clean or replace the pad, stop topping up the tray, and fan the stack before loading.

Indirectly. Cheaper paper often has a rougher cut edge and more loose dust, and that dust is what glazes rollers. It also tends to vary more in thickness, which upsets the separation mechanism. Mid-priced 20 lb multipurpose paper from a known brand, stored properly, is the sweet spot.
How often should I clean the rollers?

Will printing on the back of used paper cause feed problems?
