Why Does My Printer Only Print Half a Page?

Half-page printing comes from one of three places. Figuring out which saves a lot of guesswork:

  • Settings: paper size, orientation or scaling in the print dialog doesn’t match the page. This is the most common cause and affects every document.
  • The file or app: one PDF or web page cuts off but others print fine. The document has odd page dimensions, a corrupted font or a huge embedded image.
  • The printer: the page feeds crooked, stops partway, or a laser printer runs out of memory on a complex page and prints only the part it could process.

How Do I Fix a Printer That Only Prints Half a Page?

Fix 1: Check Your Paper Size Settings

Fix 2: Check Your Page Scaling

Set your scaling option to Fit to Page instead of a custom percentage. Custom scaling can push part of the page outside the printable area. Fix 3: Realign the Paper Guides in the Tray

Use your printer manufacturer maintenance software to run a print head alignment. This resolves many partial-page and misaligned print issues.

If Only Some Documents Print Half a Page

Print the PDF as an Image

In Adobe Acrobat Reader, open Print > Advanced and tick Print As Image. This sends a simple picture of the page instead of complex fonts and layers, which clears most half-page PDF problems. In a browser, save the page as a PDF first, then print the saved PDF.

Laser Printers: Simplify Complex Pages

If a laser printer cuts off pages with big photos or graphics but prints text pages fine, the job may be too big for the printer’s memory. Lower the print quality to 600 dpi, print fewer pages at a time, or switch the driver from PCL to PostScript (or the reverse) if both are offered.

Reinstall or Switch the Driver
