What Ink Does the Brother MFC-J410W Use?

Quick answer: The Brother MFC-J410W uses four separate LC61 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. There's no high-yield LC61, so the standard cartridge is the one to buy. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured LC61 Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and a 4-pack.

The MFC-J410W takes the same ink as the MFC-490CW, MFC-J615W and a long list of Brother printers from the same era. Brother doesn't list LC65 cartridges for it. The UK and European MFC-J410 (no W) takes LC985 cartridges, which won't fit a U.S. model.

Discontinued. Brother released the MFC-J410W in 2010, and a Tom's Hardware buyer's guide listed it at $99.99. We found no named replacement. Brother lists its own LC61 black as discontinued, though Staples still sells LC61 cartridges.

What MFC-J410W owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in owner reviews and Brother support pages, answered in our words.

Is there a high-yield LC61?

No. Brother makes only the standard LC61, at about 450 pages for black and 325 for each color.

Can I use LC65 cartridges?

Brother doesn't list LC65 for the MFC-J410W. Use LC61.

It won't scan documents to my computer.

This usually means the scan driver is missing or the scanner is set up with the wrong network address. Reinstall Brother's full driver package, then add the scanner again in ControlCenter.

It prints blank or streaky pages.

The print head has likely dried out, which is common on printers that sat unused. Run a cleaning from the ink menu and print a quality check sheet. An idle printer may need several cleanings or a new cartridge.

MFC-J410W quirks worth knowing

  • Brother rated it at up to 33 pages a minute in black and 27 in color. There's no ISO speed rating for it, so real pages come out slower.
  • It prints, copies, scans and faxes, with a 15-sheet document feeder that handles legal size, one side at a time. PC-Fax is send only. There's no automatic two-sided printing.
  • It connects by USB or Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), with no Ethernet. It has a 1.9-inch color screen and memory card slots, but no PictBridge port.
  • The tray holds 100 sheets. A Tom's Hardware buyer's guide said the Wi-Fi alone justified the $20 premium over the DCP-J125 for light home use.
