What Toner Does the Brother MFC-L5900DW Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The Brother MFC-L5900DW uses Brother TN820 (standard, about 3,000 pages) or the high-yield TN850 (about 8,000 pages) black toner, with a separate DR820 drum unit rated at about 30,000 pages. Castle Ink stocks a compatible TN850 and DR820. Brother's list for the super-high-yield TN880 (about 12,000 pages) also includes this printer.
Don't confuse it with Brother's current TN920 family: that belongs to the newer MFC-L5915DW and MFC-L6915DW and does not fit the L5900DW.

| Cost per page (18%) | 92 | About 1.2¢ per page with our compatible TN850 (8,000 pages, $69.95) plus our DR820 drum (30,000 pages, $99.95); Brother's own TN850 and DR820 run about 2.3¢ combined. |
| Reliability (18%) | 82 | Owners praise Brother's durability but list reliability as the main con at Best Buy; the specific complaints are toner spots traced to debris on the drum unit, and TN820 buyers surprised that the standard cartridge yields far less than the TN850. |

Discontinued. Brother has retired the MFC-L5900DW in favor of the MFC-L5915DW and MFC-L6915DW, which use different toner, but TN820/TN850 toner and DR820 drums are still widely sold, including our compatible versions.

Brother TN820 / TN850 / DR820 at a Glance

|---|---|---|---|
| Black Toner (standard) | TN820 | ~3,000 pages | — |
| Black Toner (high-yield) | TN850 | ~8,000 pages | Compatible, $69.95 |
| Black Toner (super high-yield) | TN880 | ~12,000 pages | — |
| Drum Unit | DR820 | ~30,000 pages | Compatible, $99.95 |
Yields are Brother's ISO/IEC 19752 figures, as listed by Argecy and Toner Buzz. Brother separates the toner from the drum, so a DR820 outlasts several TN850 cartridges. Our toner and drum are newly manufactured compatibles.
What Does MFC-L5900DW Toner Cost per Page?
About 0.9¢ per page for our TN850 plus 0.3¢ for our DR820, roughly 1.2¢ all in. With Brother's originals it's closer to 2.3¢: one early owner worked out $565 for 32,000 pages (four TN850s and a drum) at 2016 prices. The TN820 is poor value; a Staples reviewer who tried it got about 7,000 pages less than a TN850 for only a little less money.
How to Replace the Toner
- Open the front cover and pull out the drum-and-toner assembly by its handle.
- Push down the green lock lever and lift the toner cartridge out of the drum.
- Unbox the new TN850, rock it side to side, and press it into the drum until it locks.
- Slide the green tab across the drum's corona wire once and back, then reinstall the assembly and close the cover.
When the printer asks for a new drum, replace the DR820 the same way, moving the toner cartridge into the new drum.

What MFC-L5900DW owners ask
These come from owner reviews at Best Buy and Adorama, toner reviews at Staples and Best Buy, and supply-site data, answered in our words.
Why are there spots on every page?
Brother's own advice, quoted to a Best Buy reviewer, is to check the drum unit for debris that lets toner stick. Pull the assembly, separate the toner, and look for a speck on the drum surface; if the spot repeats every few inches and cleaning doesn't help, the drum is due.
Should I buy the TN820 or TN850?
The TN850. Staples reviewers who bought the standard TN820 complained it yielded thousands fewer pages for not much saving. The cartridges are the same shape.
How is the L5900DW different from the L5850DW?
A Best Buy owner who compared them notes the L5900DW adds Gigabit Ethernet and more memory and uses the same toner. Both are discontinued.
Does it scan two-sided?
Yes. The document feeder scans both sides, and the printer prints two-sided, which is why it was popular for contracts and forms.
Can I keep printing when it says "Replace Toner"?
Brother machines usually stop. You can switch the printer to "Continue" mode in the menu to finish a job, but print quality fades fast; swap the cartridge.
MFC-L5900DW quirks worth knowing
- Argecy also lists a compatible DR820 rated for 50,000 pages, well above Brother's 30,000.
- A fuser unit (D005WR001) is a separate part; the printer will tell you when it's due, typically after six figures of pages.
- The 70-sheet document feeder and 42 pages-per-minute engine put it in a different class from Brother's L2000-series home lasers.
- It has NFC tap-to-print and a 3.7 in. touchscreen.
