What Toner Does the Canon imageCLASS MF644Cdw Use?

by Last Updated:

Quick answer: The Canon Color imageCLASS MF644Cdw uses Canon 054 or high-capacity Canon 054H toner in four separate colors. Each cartridge has its own drum built in, so there's no separate drum to buy. Castle Ink stocks compatible 054H Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and a 054H 4-pack.

The newer MF656Cdw looks similar but takes Canon 067, which doesn't fit the MF644Cdw.

Yields are Canon's ISO figures. The color cartridges in the box are starters rated at roughly 650 to 680 pages, so the first colors run out early.

Is 054H Worth It?

Yes. 054H roughly doubles the pages of standard 054. On October 14, 2026, Staples listed genuine 054H black at $129.99 (about 4.2¢ a page) and each 054H color at $131.99. Our compatible 054H cartridges are $44.95 each, about 1.5¢ a page for black and 2¢ per color, or $151.95 for the 4-pack.

Third-party toner. We found no Canon firmware that blocks compatible toner on the MF644Cdw. Owners do sometimes see a "non-genuine" warning, even with Canon cartridges; reseating the cartridge usually clears it.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the Canon MF644Cdw?

  1. Open the front cover and pull out the toner cartridge tray.
  2. Lift the empty cartridge straight up and out.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and shake it gently five or six times.
  4. Drop it into the slot with the matching color label, without touching the drum on the underside.
  5. Push the tray back in, close the cover and let the printer finish its color calibration.

Which Other Printers Use Canon 054?

The rest of the imageCLASS MF640C family (MF641Cw, MF642Cdw, MF643Cdw, MF645Cx) and the imageCLASS LBP622Cdw and LBP623Cdw. Looking at a newer model? The MF656Cdw uses Canon 067.

What MF644Cdw owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Canon's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Why did my first color toners run out so fast?

The color cartridges that ship with the printer are starters rated at roughly 650 to 680 pages, about half a standard 054.

Should I buy 054 or 054H?

054H. It fits the same slots and gives about 3,100 pages in black and 2,300 per color, against 1,500 and 1,200 for standard 054.

It says the cartridge is non-genuine or counterfeit. What should I do?

Take the cartridge out and reseat it firmly. Canon's community notes the warning can appear even on Canon toner; if it persists with a compatible, the cartridge chip may be faulty and should be replaced.

Can it scan both sides in one pass?

Yes. The 50-sheet document feeder scans both sides of a page in a single pass.

Pages have streaks or smears. What helps?

Run Canon's cleaning from the Adjustment/Maintenance menu, then swap the suspect color's cartridge. Each 054 cartridge has its own drum, so a new cartridge often fixes repeating marks.
