What Toner Does the Canon imageCLASS MF656Cdw Use?

Quick answer: The Canon imageCLASS MF656Cdw uses Canon 067 (standard) or Canon 067H (high-capacity) toner in black, cyan, magenta and yellow — four cartridges in total. There is no separate drum to buy. Castle Ink stocks every color in both sizes, starting with the 067H Black.

Canon imageCLASS MF656Cdw Toner at a Glance

Cartridge Canon Part No. Approx. Page Yield
067 Black 5102C001 ~1,350 pages
067 Cyan / 067 Magenta / 067 Yellow 5101C001 / 5100C001 / 5099C001 ~1,250 pages each
067H Black 5106C001 ~3,130 pages
067H Cyan / 067H Magenta / 067H Yellow 5105C001 / 5104C001 / 5103C001 ~2,350 pages each

The MF656Cdw is a small-office color laser all-in-one — print, copy, scan and fax at up to 22 pages per minute — with a 50-sheet single-pass duplex document feeder, automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet cassette, a 5-inch touchscreen, and Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet and USB. Each Canon 067 cartridge is an all-in-one design with the imaging drum built in, so replacing the toner also replaces the drum for that color.

067 vs. 067H: Which Should You Buy?

The 067H high-capacity cartridges are the same size as the standard 067 but print more than twice as many black pages and nearly twice as many color pages. That makes the cost per page considerably lower. Mixing is fine — many users run an 067H Black with standard colors if they mostly print text. Compare costs in our printer ink cost calculator.

How to Replace a Toner Cartridge

  1. Open the front cover of the printer.
  2. Pull out the toner cartridge tray (the drawer that holds all four cartridges) until it stops.
  3. Lift the empty cartridge straight up and out of its color slot.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge, gently shake it side to side about ten times, and remove any packing material.
  5. Place the new cartridge into the matching color slot, push the tray back in, and close the front cover.

Avoid touching the drum surface or the electrical contacts on the cartridge, and keep it out of direct sunlight while it is out of the printer.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Toner cartridge is not recognized" or "Cartridge error": Remove and reseat the cartridge, check that it is in the right color slot, and make sure all packing material is removed. More steps: printer says cartridge not recognized.

Low-toner message too early: Canon's warning appears while usable toner remains. You can usually keep printing until quality visibly fades.

Colors look off: Run Adjust Image Quality > Correct Color Mismatch (registration) and calibration from the Settings/Registration menu. See printer printing the wrong colors.

Streaks or spots in one color: Because the drum is in the cartridge, a defect that repeats in only one color is usually fixed by replacing that color's cartridge.

Which Other Printers Use Canon 067 Toner?

Canon 067 and 067H also fit the Canon imageCLASS LBP632Cdw, LBP633Cdw, MF652Cdw, MF653Cdw and MF654Cdw. Don't confuse 067 with Canon 055 (used by the MF743Cdw) or Canon 069 (used by the MF753Cdw).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the MF656Cdw need a separate drum?
No. Each Canon 067 cartridge includes its own drum.

Is Canon 067 the same as Canon 055 or 069?
No. Those are different cartridge families for other imageCLASS models and will not fit the MF656Cdw.

Can I mix 067 and 067H cartridges?
Yes. Any combination of standard and high-capacity cartridges works.

Does compatible toner void my Canon warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Canon cannot void your warranty only because you used third-party toner.
