What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA MG2922 Use?

Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MG2922 uses two FINE cartridges: Canon PG-245 Black and Canon CL-246 Color, with PG-245XL and CL-246XL as the high-yield versions. Castle Ink stocks PG-245XL Black, CL-246XL Color and a PG-245XL + CL-246XL combo pack.

Canon PIXMA MG2922 Ink Cartridges at a Glance

Cartridge Color Canon Part No. Approx. Page Yield
Canon PG-245 Black (standard) 8279B001 ~180 pages
Canon PG-245XL Black (high-yield) 8278B001 ~300 pages
Canon CL-246 Color (standard) 8281B001 ~180 pages
Canon CL-246XL Color (high-yield) 8280B001 ~300 pages

The MG2922 is a two-cartridge printer: one pigment black cartridge for crisp text and one color cartridge that holds cyan, magenta and yellow in separate chambers. Both are Canon "FINE" cartridges, meaning the printhead is built into the cartridge itself — every replacement also gives you a brand-new set of nozzles, which is why clogs on this printer are usually fixed by a new cartridge.

The PIXMA MG2922 is a budget wireless print, copy and scan all-in-one sold widely at big-box retailers. It also accepts Canon's low-capacity PG-243 and CL-244 cartridges, which are sometimes the only option on store shelves — they fit, but they hold even less ink than the standard 245/246.

Standard vs. XL: Which Should You Buy?

The XL cartridges are the same physical size as the standard ones but hold more ink — about 300 pages each instead of about 180. On a printer this small, that difference adds up quickly, so XL is the better buy unless you print only a handful of pages a year. Our printer ink cost calculator shows the cost-per-page difference at your prices.

How to Replace Ink in the Canon PIXMA MG2922

  1. Make sure the printer is on, then open the paper output tray and the front cover. The cartridge holder slides to the replacement position.
  2. Push the empty cartridge down until it clicks, then lift it out of its holder.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and gently peel off the protective tape. Do not touch the gold contacts or the nozzles on the underside.
  4. Insert the cartridge at a slight angle — color (CL-246) on the left, black (PG-245) on the right — and push it up until it clicks into place.
  5. Close the front cover. The printer will initialize the new cartridge; wait for the power light to stop flashing before printing.

Troubleshooting Tips

"The remaining level of the ink cannot be correctly detected": This appears with refilled or remanufactured FINE cartridges because the chip remembers it was previously emptied. To continue, press and hold the printer's Stop/Reset button for at least 5 seconds. This disables the ink-level monitor for that cartridge only — the printer still works normally, you just won't see an accurate level for it.

Blinking orange alarm light: A blinking alarm lamp after a cartridge change usually means the cartridge is not seated or not recognized — remove it, reseat it until it clicks and try again. For a full list of causes see why is my Canon printer not printing.

Streaks or missing colors: Run Cleaning (and Deep Cleaning if needed) from the Canon PRINT app or printer driver, then print a nozzle check. If a cartridge still streaks after two cleanings, replace it — the printhead is on the cartridge. See printer printing faded text.

Cartridge "not recognized": Wipe the contacts with a dry lint-free cloth and reseat. Full steps: printer says ink cartridge not recognized.

Bottom Line

The Canon PIXMA MG2922 uses PG-245 black and CL-246 color, and the XL versions — PG-245XL and CL-246XL — give you the most pages for your money. If you see an ink-level detection message after a cartridge change, hold Stop for five seconds and keep printing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use PG-243 and CL-244 in the MG2922?
Yes. They are lower-capacity versions of the same cartridge design and fit the MG2922, but you'll replace them more often.

Will PG-240 or PG-260 fit the MG2922?
No. PG-240/CL-241 and PG-260/CL-261 are different cartridge families with different shapes. Use PG-245/CL-246 (or PG-243/CL-244).

Can the MG2922 print with only the black cartridge?
Both cartridges should normally be installed. If one runs out, Canon's driver has an Ink Cartridge Settings option on the Maintenance tab that lets you print with only black or only color until the replacement arrives.

Does the MG2922 print on both sides automatically?
No. It supports manual two-sided printing only, where you flip the paper when prompted.
