What is the difference between the standard and XL Canon PG-245 / CL-246 cartridges?

PG-245 black prints about 180 pages and CL-246 color about 180; PG-245XL black prints about 300 pages and CL-246XL color about 300. They share the same cartridge body and slot, so you can move between sizes freely.

Standard or XL: which should I buy?

XL in almost every case. The XL cartridges are the same physical size and fit the same slot, but hold more ink, so each printed page costs less. Standard cartridges only make sense if you print very rarely, since ink can dry out over long idle periods.
