On October 30, 2026, Staples listed Brother's TN830XL at $98.29 (about 3.3¢ a page), TN830 at $60.99 (about 5.1¢ a page) and DR830 drum at $162.99 (about 1.1¢ a page); 4inkjets had the TN830XL at $92.99 and the DR830 at $148.99. Will Compatible Toner Work?
Yes, as of October 2026. Compatible TN830 and TN830XL cartridges are built with a chip for this family, and we know of no Brother firmware that blocks them in the DCP-L2647DW or its TN830 siblings. In March 2025 Brother was accused of using firmware updates to hobble third-party toner, with most reports about color-registration problems; Brother said its updates do not block third-party supplies and that its printers do not intentionally degrade print quality based on the cartridge.
Because a future update could change how chips are read, we suggest leaving automatic firmware updates off if you run compatible toner, and installing a new cartridge soon after it arrives so any recognition problem shows up within the return window. The one real lock-in is Brother's optional Refresh EZ Print subscription: Brother says canceling it deactivates the subscription cartridge, which you then replace at your own expense.
How Do I Replace the Toner in the DCP-L2647DW?
- With the printer on, open the front cover.
- Lift out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly and set it on disposable paper.
- Push down the green lock lever and pull the old toner cartridge out of the drum unit.
- Unpack the new TN830 or TN830XL, gently shake it side to side and remove the protective cover.
- Push the cartridge firmly into the drum unit until it locks; the lever lifts on its own.
- Clean the corona wire by sliding the green tab from side to side several times, then return it to the home position.
- Slide the assembly back into the printer and close the front cover.

Why do some listings say the in-box toner gives "500 extra pages"?
That is marketing shorthand: the included 1,200-page cartridge prints about 500 more pages than the 700-page starter in the DCP-L2640DW. Your first replacement is a standard TN830 or TN830XL.
Can it scan both sides of a page or send a fax?
No. Brother lists no two-sided scanning or copying from the 50-page feeder, and the DCP models have no fax. Printing is two-sided automatically.
