Toner and Drum Are Two Different Things
Brother splits these into separate units, which is good news for running costs. The toner holds the powder; the drum transfers it to the page. The DR830 is rated for about 15,000 pages, which is about five TN830XL cartridges or twelve standard TN830s. A "Replace Drum" message does not mean you need toner, and a "Replace Toner" message does not mean you need a drum.
The In-Box Cartridge Is a Starter
The toner that ships in the box is a ~700-page starter cartridge, not a full 1,200-page TN830. That is why a lot of owners feel the first replacement arrives sooner than expected. Budget for it.
For almost everyone the high-yield TN830XL is the right buy — two and a half times the pages of the standard TN830 for far less than two and a half times the price. There is also a TN830V "value" cartridge rated around 3,300 pages, but it is sold through Costco and will not show up in normal retail searches. Brother's own HL-L2405W page lists only the TN830 and TN830XL. Note there is no TN830XXL, so anything sold as "TN830XXL" is a third-party product using a name Brother does not use.
A note on firmware: in March 2025 Brother was widely reported to have shipped firmware that restricted third-party toner on some models. Brother publicly denied it. Either way, owners who run compatible toner should consider turning automatic firmware updates off.

No. Brother lists automatic two-sided printing as "No" for the HL-L2405W. You can print two-sided by hand, turning the stack over between sides.
Do I have to sign up for Brother's Refresh subscription?
No. Refresh EZ Print is optional. The printer works with toner you buy yourself.
It still says Toner Low after I put in a new cartridge.
Brother says the status only resets with a brand-new, unused cartridge. Check that the toner is clicked into the drum, that you didn't swap the drum by mistake, and clean the corona wire.
What does a "Drum !" message mean?
Usually that the corona wire needs cleaning, not that the drum is worn out. Brother's advice is to clean it, re-seat the toner and drum, and replace the drum only if the message keeps coming back.
I fitted a new DR830 and it still says Replace Drum.
The drum counter has to be reset by hand after a new drum goes in. Until you do, the message keeps showing.
HL-L2405W quirks worth knowing
- It has dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) and Wi-Fi Direct, which is unusual on a print-only budget laser, but there is no Ethernet port.
- Brother lists 17 printers that share the TN830, TN830XL and DR830, from the HL-L2400D to the MFC-L2980DW, which is why compatible toner for it is easy to find.
- Besides the 250-sheet tray there is a 1-sheet manual feed slot, and it takes legal (8.5 x 14 in) and Folio (8 x 13 in) paper.
