What Toner Does the Brother HL-L2420DW Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said the 3,000-page TN830XL is the largest toner Brother makes for this printer. The Costco-sold TN830V, rated about 3,300 pages, also fits the HL-L2420DW.
Quick answer: The Brother HL-L2420DW uses TN830 standard-yield or TN830XL high-yield black toner, plus a separate DR830 imaging drum that is replaced far less often than the toner. Toner and drum are two different parts on this printer — that is a feature, not an inconvenience.
Do not carry over toner from an older Brother. The TN830 family is the 2024 generation and is not interchangeable with the TN730, TN760 or TN770 cartridges used by the HL-L2350DW, HL-L2370DW and MFC-L2710DW, even though the printers look nearly identical.

Yields are ISO/IEC 19752 at 5% coverage. TN830XL is not quite the top of the range: the Costco-sold TN830V, rated about 3,300 pages, also fits the HL-L2420DW. Brother's 5,000-page TN835 Super High Yield does not; it is made only for the HL-L2865DW and MFC-L2980DW.
TN830 vs TN830XL: which should you buy?
The TN830XL holds two and a half times the toner for well under two and a half times the price, so on cost per page it is the clear choice for anyone printing regularly. The standard TN830 is really there for very light users and for people who would rather not have money sitting on a shelf.
The starter cartridge in the box is worth knowing about: at roughly 700 pages it is a little over half a standard cartridge, so the first replacement comes sooner than the printer's spec sheet suggests.
Don't forget the drum
The HL-L2420DW separates the drum from the toner, which is genuinely good for you. You replace a cheap toner cartridge many times over before the DR830 drum needs changing, and when print quality does degrade you can tell which part is responsible instead of guessing.
Two practical points. First, "Replace Drum Soon" refers to the DR830, not the toner — a lot of people buy toner in response to that message and are surprised when nothing changes. Second, after fitting a new drum you must reset the drum counter from the control panel, or the printer will keep warning you.
How to replace the toner in an HL-L2420DW
- Leave the printer switched on and open the front cover.
- Pull the drum and toner assembly out of the printer as a single unit.
- Push down the green lock lever on the assembly and lift the used toner cartridge away from the drum.
- Unbox the new TN830 or TN830XL, rock it gently side to side five or six times, and remove the protective cover.
- Slide the new cartridge into the drum unit until it clicks and the lock lever lifts on its own.
- Clean the corona wire by sliding the green tab from left to right and back a few times, then return it to the home position — skipping this step is the most common cause of vertical streaks after a toner change.
- Put the assembly back in the printer and close the front cover.
Troubleshooting an HL-L2420DW
- "Replace Toner" while the cartridge still feels heavy. Brother tracks toner by counter, not by weight. Removing and reseating the cartridge sometimes clears a premature warning. Brother's Continue Mode will also keep the printer running past the empty message — useful when you are mid-job.
- Vertical streaks or a repeating line. Clean the corona wire with the green slider first. If it persists, the drum is the likely culprit rather than the toner.
- "Replace Drum Soon." That is the DR830, not the toner. Order a drum, and remember to reset the counter after fitting it.
- Faded print across the page. Rock the cartridge to redistribute toner and confirm Toner Save mode is off in the driver.
- Printer connects to Wi-Fi then drops. The HL-L2420DW is dual-band. If your router publishes one SSID for both bands, pinning the printer to the 2.4 GHz band usually stabilizes it. There is no Ethernet port on this model, so wireless has to work.
- Third-party toner not recognized. Brother has publicly stated that its firmware does not restrict third-party supplies, and independent coverage of the 2025 claims to the contrary found the evidence thin. In practice, most failures on this generation trace to chip or reset-gear defects on poorly made aftermarket cartridges rather than to any lockout. Many owners still choose to turn off automatic firmware updates as a precaution.
