Toner and Drum Are Two Different Things
Brother splits these into separate units, which is good news for running costs. The toner holds the powder; the drum transfers it to the page. At roughly twelve toner changes per drum, most home users never replace the drum at all. A "Replace Drum" message does not mean you need toner, and a "Replace Toner" message does not mean you need a drum.
The In-Box Cartridge Is a Starter
The toner that ships in the box is a ~700-page starter cartridge, not a full 1,200-page TN830. That is why a lot of owners feel the first replacement arrives sooner than expected. Budget for it.
For almost everyone the high-yield TN830XL is the right buy — two and a half times the pages of the standard TN830 for far less than two and a half times the price. There is also a TN830V "value" cartridge rated around 3,300 pages, but it is a warehouse-club SKU (we found it at Costco) and will not show up in normal retail searches. Note there is no TN830XXL. The largest Brother cartridge that fits this printer is the TN830V, so anything sold as "TN830XXL" is a third-party product using a name Brother does not use.

Brother also sells an MFC-L2900DW XL variant that ships with two cartridges in the box, a TN830 and a TN830XL (about 4,200 pages combined), instead of the 700-page starter. Brother lists it at $379.99. It is the same printer and the same consumables — the only difference is what comes with it. At the prices we saw ($329.99 for the standard model, $379.99 for the XL bundle), the extra $50 buys about 3,500 more pages of toner, so compare the two before you buy.
A note on firmware: in March 2025 Brother was widely reported to have shipped firmware that restricted third-party toner on some models. Brother publicly denied it. Either way, owners who run compatible toner should consider turning automatic firmware updates off.
