What Toner Does the Brother HL-L2390DW Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said TN-770 super high yield toner fits the HL-L2390DW. It doesn't. Brother lists the TN770 only for the HL-L2370DW and MFC-L2750DW (and their XL versions). The HL-L2390DW takes TN730 or TN760.
The Brother HL-L2390DW is a monochrome laser all-in-one (print, copy and scan from a flatbed) that uses the Brother TN-730 (standard yield) and TN-760 (high yield) toner cartridges, along with the DR-730 drum unit. The super high yield TN-770 does not fit this printer.

How to Replace the Toner
- Open the front cover of the HL-L2390DW.
- Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly together.
- Press down the green lock lever and lift the used toner out of the drum unit.
- Unpack the new TN-730 or TN-760 cartridge, rock it side to side to distribute toner, then snap it into the drum unit.
- Reinsert the assembly and close the front cover.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Replace Toner warning: The HL-L2390DW will display a low or replace toner alert before printing stops.
- Faded prints: Remove the cartridge and gently rock it side to side to redistribute remaining toner.
- Declining print quality: If issues persist after a fresh toner, the DR-730 drum unit may need replacement.
- Paper jams: Check the rear paper path and the manual feed slot for misfed sheets.
What HL-L2390DW owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Brother's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Can I use the 4,500-page TN770 in the HL-L2390DW?
No. Brother lists the TN770 only for the HL-L2370DW, HL-L2370DW XL, MFC-L2750DW and MFC-L2750DW XL. For the 2390DW, the TN760 (about 3,000 pages) is the largest cartridge.
I put in a new drum but it still says Replace Drum.
The drum counter has to be reset after a new DR730 goes in. Brother says to reset it only when you have actually replaced the drum.
What does "2-sided Disabled" mean?
The back cover isn't fully closed or the 2-sided tray isn't pushed all the way in. Close the cover or re-seat the tray and the error clears.
How long does the DR730 drum last?
Brother rates it at about 12,000 pages. That is roughly four TN760 cartridges or ten TN730s.
Is the HL-L2390DW still sold new?
No. Brother marks it discontinued, but the TN730, TN760 and DR730 are all still sold.
HL-L2390DW quirks worth knowing
- It is a print, copy and scan machine with a flatbed glass, but no document feeder. The DCP-L2550DW and the MFC models that share its toner do have one.
- Brother lists 12 printers for TN730 and TN760, including the DCP-L2550DW, MFC-L2690DW and MFC-L2717DW, which many guides leave out.
- The duplex unit is a removable 2-sided tray. If it isn't fully inserted, two-sided printing stops working.
- The toner in the box is a starter cartridge rated for about 700 pages, so the first replacement comes sooner than a full TN730 would suggest.
