Quick answer: The Brother DCP-L2640DW uses TN830 (standard) or TN830XL (high-yield) black toner, plus a separate DR830 drum unit. Castle Ink stocks compatible TN830 and TN830XL toner and a compatible DR830 drum. U.S. shipping is free on orders over $50.

The DCP-L2640DW is the multifunction model in Brother's 2024 mono laser line — print, copy and scan with a 50-sheet document feeder. TN830, TN830XL and DR830 fit 17 Brother models, including the HL-L2400D, HL-L2405W, HL-L2420DW, HL-L2460DW, HL-L2465DW, HL-L2480DW, HL-L2865DW, DCP-L2647DW, MFC-L2760DW, MFC-L2807DW, MFC-L2820DW, MFC-L2900DW and MFC-L2980DW, so the same toner and drum serve all of them.

Brother DCP-L2640DW Toner and Drum at a Glance

Supply Color Approx. Yield
Brother TN830 Black ~1,200 pages
Brother TN830XL Black up to 3,000 pages
Brother TN830V (warehouse-club SKU) Black ~3,300 pages
Brother DR830 drum unit — ~15,000 pages

Toner and Drum Are Two Different Things

Brother splits these into separate units, which is good news for running costs. The toner holds the powder; the drum transfers it to the page. Brother rates the DR830 drum at about 15,000 pages: roughly twelve standard TN830 cartridges or five TN830XL. Most home users replace it rarely, if ever. A "Replace Drum" message does not mean you need toner, and a "Replace Toner" message does not mean you need a drum.

The In-Box Cartridge Is a Starter

The toner that ships in the box is a ~700-page starter cartridge, not a full 1,200-page TN830. That is why a lot of owners feel the first replacement arrives sooner than expected. Budget for it.

For almost everyone the high-yield TN830XL is the right buy — two and a half times the pages of the standard TN830 for far less than two and a half times the price. There is also a TN830V "value" cartridge rated around 3,300 pages, but it is a warehouse-club SKU (Costco, Sam's Club) and will not show up in normal retail searches. Note there is no TN830XXL. Brother does make a TN835 Super High Yield (up to 5,000 pages) in the same family, but it fits only the HL-L2865DW and MFC-L2980DW, not the DCP-L2640DW. Anything sold as "TN830XXL" is a third-party product using a name Brother does not use.

A note on firmware: in March 2025 Brother was widely reported to have shipped firmware that restricted third-party toner on some models. Brother publicly denied it. Either way, owners who run compatible toner should consider turning automatic firmware updates off.

What DCP-L2640DW owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Brother's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Can the document feeder scan both sides of a page?

No. Brother lists two-sided scanning as not supported, so two-sided originals have to be flipped and re-fed. Printing, on the other hand, is two-sided automatically.

Can I plug it into my router with a cable?

Yes. It has an Ethernet port as well as dual-band Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and USB 2.0.

Can it fax?

No. The DCP models print, copy and scan only.

Can I print on cardstock or envelopes?

Use the single-sheet manual feed slot. It takes heavier paper than the main tray (up to 61 lb versus 43 lb) and custom sizes from 3 × 5 in up to 8.5 × 14 in.

Can I print from my phone?

Yes. It supports AirPrint, Mopria and Brother's Mobile Connect app.

DCP-L2640DW quirks worth knowing

  • Brother rates the DR830 drum at about 15,000 pages measured at one page per job, and says real life varies with paper type and job size.
  • Brother's "XL" printer bundles in this family, such as the HL-L2460DW XL, ship with a TN830 plus a TN830XL (about 4,200 pages together), not a special super-high-yield cartridge.
  • Brother recommends up to 2,500 pages a month, with a maximum duty cycle of 35,000. That is plenty of headroom for a home office.
  • The main tray holds 250 sheets and the output tray 100, with the 1-sheet manual slot for anything unusual.
