What Toner Does the Brother HL-L2400D Use?

Quick answer: The Brother HL-L2400D uses TN830 (standard) or TN830XL (high-yield) black toner, plus a separate DR830 drum unit. We sell compatible TN830 and TN830XL toner and a compatible DR830 drum. U.S. shipping is free on orders over $50, and orders placed by 4 PM ET ship the same day.

The HL-L2400D is a print-only, USB-only mono laser. The "D" is duplex — it prints two-sided automatically.

Brother HL-L2400D Toner and Drum at a Glance

Supply Color Approx. Yield
Brother TN830 Black ~1,200 pages
Brother TN830XL Black up to 3,000 pages
Brother DR830 drum unit — ~15,000 pages

Toner and Drum Are Two Different Things

Brother splits these into separate units, which is good news for running costs. The toner holds the powder; the drum transfers it to the page. The DR830 drum is rated for about 15,000 pages, which is about five TN830XL cartridges or about twelve standard TN830s. A "Replace Drum" message does not mean you need toner, and a "Replace Toner" message does not mean you need a drum.

The In-Box Cartridge Is a Starter

The toner that ships in the box is a ~700-page starter cartridge, not a full 1,200-page TN830. That is why a lot of owners feel the first replacement arrives sooner than expected. Budget for it.

For almost everyone the high-yield TN830XL is the right buy — two and a half times the pages of the standard TN830 for far less than two and a half times the price. There is no TN830XXL. Brother lists only the TN830 and TN830XL (plus multipacks of the XL), so anything sold as "TN830XXL" is a third-party product using a name Brother does not use.

One Thing to Check Before You Buy

The HL-L2400D is USB only. There is no Wi-Fi and no Ethernet. This is the most common surprise on this model, and it is worth checking before you order — the HL-L2405W adds Wi-Fi and uses the same TN830 toner and DR830 drum, but it has no automatic two-sided printing and is rated 30 ppm instead of 32.

A note on firmware: in March 2025 Brother was widely reported to have shipped firmware that restricted third-party toner on some models. Brother publicly denied it. Either way, owners who run compatible toner should consider turning automatic firmware updates off.

What HL-L2400D owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Brother's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Can I use the HL-L2400D with a Mac?

Not in practice. Brother provides drivers for Windows and Linux only, and owners report they can't print from macOS, including Sequoia. If you're on a Mac, this is the wrong printer.

Why doesn't it print at the advertised 32 pages per minute?

Two-sided printing is on by default. Brother's 32 ppm rating is for one-sided printing and needs a change from the default setting.

Is a USB cable included?

No. It connects only by USB, and Brother doesn't include the cable, so buy one with the printer.

How much printing is it built for?

Brother rates it for up to 35,000 pages a month and recommends up to 2,500.

HL-L2400D quirks worth knowing

  • The same TN830 toner and DR830 drum fit more than 17 Brother models, including the HL-L2460DW, HL-L2480DW, DCP-L2640DW and MFC-L2900DW, so spare supplies carry over if you upgrade.
  • If you want Wi-Fi and automatic two-sided printing, the HL-L2405W isn't it: it drops duplex. The HL-L2460DW or a higher model has both.
  • Paper handling is basic: one 250-sheet tray plus a 1-sheet manual feed slot, with Legal as the largest size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HL-L2400D have Wi-Fi?
No. It connects by USB only. The HL-L2405W has Wi-Fi and takes the same TN830 toner, but it has no automatic two-sided printing.

What toner does the Brother HL-L2400D use?
TN830 standard or TN830XL high-yield black toner, plus a DR830 drum unit. The XL is the better value for anything beyond very light printing.

How many pages does TN830XL print?
Up to about 3,000 pages, against roughly 1,200 for the standard TN830 and about 700 for the starter cartridge in the box.

Do I need to replace the drum every time I change toner?
No. The DR830 drum is rated for roughly 15,000 pages, about five high-yield TN830XL cartridges or about twelve standard TN830s.

Is there a TN830XXL?
No. Brother lists the TN830 and TN830XL (and XL multipacks). Anything advertised as TN830XXL is a third-party cartridge.
