Best Compatible Toner for Brother TN830 & TN830XL (2026): Prices Compared

Last updated: October 28, 2026.

Quick answer: For a Brother HL-L2400D, HL-L2460DW, MFC-L2820DW or any other TN830 printer, the cartridge we would buy is our compatible Brother TN830XL high-yield black at $59.95 for a rated 3,000 pages. Brother lists the genuine TN830XL at $98.29 for the same 3,000 pages, so ours saves about 39% and works out to 2.0 cents a page against 3.3 cents for genuine. The saving is real but it is not the biggest on the market: LD Products, CompAndSave and YB Toner all sell a compatible TN830XL for $25 to $34, and we show those numbers below. The caveat that matters on this family is not firmware, since Brother says its updates do not block third-party toner; it is the chip and the seller behind it, because the new TN830 chip is what tells the printer how much toner is left.

We'll say the obvious thing up front: we sell these cartridges, so our recommendation is not neutral. To make up for that, the table below puts LD Products, 4inkjets, Staples, CompAndSave, YB Toner and an Amazon marketplace brand next to our own price, and on this cartridge most of them are cheaper than we are. We explain what you get for the difference and let you decide. This post covers which printers take TN830, what every option costs per page as of October 2026, the DR830 drum you will eventually need, and what Brother has actually said about compatible toner and firmware.

What printers use Brother TN830 toner?

TN830 and TN830XL are the cartridges for Brother's 2024 generation of monochrome lasers, the successor to the TN730/TN760 line. They are not interchangeable with TN760; the older HL-L2350DW and MFC-L2750DW take TN760, and the shells differ.

  • Brother HL-L2400D and HL-L2405W
  • Brother HL-L2420DW, HL-L2460DW, HL-L2460DW XL, HL-L2465DW, HL-L2480DW and HL-L2865DW
  • Brother DCP-L2640DW and DCP-L2647DW
  • Brother MFC-L2760DW, MFC-L2807DW, MFC-L2820DW, MFC-L2900DW and MFC-L2980DW

Like every Brother mono laser, these printers use a separate drum unit, the DR830, rated at 15,000 pages. The toner cartridge slides into the drum, and the printer asks for a new drum roughly every five XL cartridges. Budget for it; it is a $157.99 part from Brother and $75.95 from us.

Prices checked October 2026 at the sellers' sites; they change often.

We are not the cheapest compatible TN830XL and the table shows it. YB Toner is $24.95, CompAndSave $32.95, LD and 4inkjets $33.99; we are $59.95, which is roughly double. The only third-party option that costs more than ours is Staples' remanufactured unit at $67.99. If price alone decides it, buy from one of them. What we charge for is the part of the transaction that happens after you click: the cartridge ships the same day from Greenlawn, NY on orders placed by 4 PM ET Monday through Friday, from stock we hold in the US rather than a drop-shipper; the product page tells you it carries a new chip, so you know what the printer will see; you have a full year to return it for a full refund; and a person in New York answers the phone. We replace or refund any cartridge that arrives defective. Several of the cheaper listings say "contact seller" for warranty and do not say where the cartridge ships from, and on a cartridge that lives inside your printer for 3,000 pages, we think that is worth knowing before you buy.

Our pick: compatible Brother TN830XL high-yield black

The TN830XL compatible at $59.95 is the cartridge we would put in an HL-L2460DW or MFC-L2900DW. It is a newly manufactured cartridge with a new chip, so there is nothing to transfer from your old cartridge, and the printer reads toner level normally. At 3,000 rated pages it is 2.0 cents a page, about 39% under Brother's $98.29 list price, or $38 saved per cartridge. The honest trade-off is that LD, CompAndSave and YB Toner sell the same rated yield for $25 to $34, so if you are confident in a seller's warranty and shipping, you can save another $26 to $35 per cartridge over us. We would rather you knew that than found out later.

The other Castle Ink TN830 options: the compatible TN830 standard-yield black ($39.95, Brother rates this capacity at 1,200 pages) and the compatible DR830 drum unit ($75.95, 15,000 pages). The standard cartridge is the wrong buy for almost everyone: at 3.3 cents a page it costs the same per page as genuine TN830XL, and the XL is only $20 more for two and a half times the toner.

Chips, Brother firmware and the Continue Mode reset

TN830 cartridges carry a chip that reports toner level to the printer. Compatibles ship with a new chip and need no chip transfer. Brother is not HP: there is no dynamic security program, and in March 2025, after a widely shared claim that Brother was locking out third-party toner, Brother told The Register that "Brother firmware updates do not block the use of third-party ink in our machines" and that its printers "do not distinguish between genuine and non-genuine cartridges." The documented cases that fed the 2025 story were older color models, the DCP-L3550CDW and MFC-L3770CDW, where technicians on CopyTechNet recorded firmware 1.59 turning a "Replace Toner" message into "No Toner" on an aftermarket chip. We have seen no equivalent report on the TN830 line, and we would not disable Brother updates on the strength of those older cases.

Two practical things do carry over from the TN760 generation. First, an aftermarket chip can report a lower page count than the toner actually left, so "Replace Toner" may appear early. Brother's own HL-L2460DW manual documents Continue Mode, which lets the printer keep going until the pages fade: on the HL-L2400D press Go seven times; on LCD models go to General Setup, Replace Toner, Continue. It resets to Stop every time you change the cartridge, so expect to set it again. Second, Brother's 3-year limited warranty excludes "damage resulting from use of non-Brother brand parts, supply and accessory items" but does not say that using them cancels coverage, which is what the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act requires. Keep your genuine cartridge box; if support asks you to reproduce a fault with Brother toner, you will want it.

How to choose a Brother TN830 cartridge

  • Buy the XL, not the standard. Genuine TN830 is 5.1 cents a page against 3.3 for TN830XL, and the compatible gap is the same shape: $39.95 for 1,200 pages versus $59.95 for 3,000 at Castle Ink.
  • Confirm your printer takes TN830, not TN760. HL-L2400D, HL-L2405W, HL-L2460DW, DCP-L2640DW, MFC-L2820DW and MFC-L2900DW are TN830 printers; the older HL-L2350DW and MFC-L2750DW are TN760, and the two do not interchange.
  • Budget for the DR830 drum. The printer will ask for it roughly every five XL cartridges; genuine is $157.99, our compatible is $75.95.
  • Prefer a seller with a written US warranty of at least a year and a chipped cartridge. Several marketplace listings say "contact seller" and do not state where the cartridge ships from.
  • If the printer says Replace Toner with pages left, enable Continue Mode and judge by the print, not the gauge.
  • Do not block Brother firmware updates on the strength of the 2025 claims. Brother denied blocking and the documented cases were older color models.

Brother TN830 Compatible Toner FAQs

What is the difference between TN830 and TN830XL?

Both fit the same printers. TN830 is rated for about 1,200 pages and lists at $60.99; TN830XL is rated for about 3,000 pages at $98.29, so the XL costs about 35% less per page. Compatible XLs from Castle Ink, LD and others are rated at the same 3,000 pages.

Do I need to buy a drum with my TN830 toner?

Not every time. The DR830 drum unit is rated for about 15,000 pages and is sold separately from the toner. The printer displays a Replace Drum message when it is due; a compatible DR830 is about half the OEM price.

Will a compatible TN830XL void my Brother warranty?

Brother's limited warranty excludes damage caused by non-Brother supplies but does not say that using them cancels coverage, and the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act bars a blanket tie-in. Keep the OEM cartridge box in case support asks you to reproduce an issue with genuine toner.

Will Brother firmware updates block a compatible TN830 cartridge?

Brother stated publicly in March 2025 that its firmware updates do not block third-party cartridges and that its printers do not distinguish genuine from non-genuine. Isolated reports of a "No Toner" message after a firmware update exist for older color models, so buy from a seller that will replace a cartridge the printer refuses.

The bottom line

For any TN830 printer, the compatible Brother TN830XL at $59.95 is the cartridge we would buy: a new chip, 3,000 rated pages, same-day US shipping, a year to return it and a phone that gets answered, for about 39% less than genuine. It is not the cheapest compatible on the market; YB Toner, CompAndSave and LD Products are $25 to $34, and we have put their prices in the table so you can weigh the difference yourself.
