What Ink Does the HP Envy 4511 Use?

Quick answer: The HP Envy 4511 uses two cartridges: an HP 63 or HP 63XL black and an HP 63 or HP 63XL tri-color. HP is now replacing these with combined HP 63/65 cartridges, which also fit. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured HP 63XL Black, HP 63XL Tri-color and a 63XL black + tri-color 2-pack.

It shares these cartridges with the Envy 4512, Envy 4520, OfficeJet 3830 and DeskJet 3630. Retailer compatibility lists group the 4511 with the Envy 4512, 4513 and 4516, which take the same inks. Despite the similar name, the older Envy 4500, 4501 and 4502 take HP 61, not HP 63, so don't mix them up.

Discontinued. HP's U.S. store lists the Envy 4511 (K9H50A) as discontinued. We couldn't confirm its launch date or price. In October 2026, 4inkjets had original HP 63XL black and tri-color cartridges in stock but standard HP 63 cartridges backordered, and HP is phasing out HP 63 in favor of the combined HP 63/65.

What Ink Cartridges Does the HP Envy 4511 Take?

Cartridge HP part no. Approx. yield Castle Ink option
HP 63 Black F6U62AN ~190 pages —
HP 63XL Black (high yield) F6U64AN ~480 pages Remanufactured HP 63XL Black
HP 63 Tri-color F6U61AN ~165 pages —
HP 63XL Tri-color (high yield) F6U63AN ~330 pages Remanufactured HP 63XL Tri-color
HP 63/65XL Black (new) B7RT5AN ~300 pages —
HP 63XL black + tri-color 2-pack — ~480 / 330 pages Remanufactured 63XL 2-pack

Yields for the original HP 63 and 63XL are seller-listed figures from 4inkjets. Some newer listings quote lower numbers, for example Staples lists the HP 63 black at about 170 pages. HP rates the new 63/65XL black at about 300 pages, so it prints fewer pages than the older 63XL black. We stock only the XL size, as it costs much less per page.

Are HP 63XL Cartridges Worth It?

Yes. They hold about two and a half times as much ink as the standard HP 63. On October 21, 2026, 4inkjets listed HP's 63XL black at $62.99 (about 13.1¢ a page) and 63XL tri-color at $75.99 (about 23¢ a page), both in stock. HP's standard 63 black and tri-color were $32.99 and $45.99 there, about 17.4¢ and 27.9¢ a page, and both were backordered. Our remanufactured HP 63XL black is $23.49 (about 4.9¢ a page) and HP 63XL tri-color is $24.49 (about 7.4¢ a page), or $45.95 for the 2-pack.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP Envy 4511?

  1. Turn the printer on. The cartridge carriage only moves into place while the printer is on.
  2. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  3. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out of its slot. Tri-color goes on the left and black on the right.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape by its pull tab. Don't touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
  5. Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and push until it snaps into place.
  6. Close the access door and let the printer run its cartridge alignment when asked.

Which Other Printers Use HP 63 and 63XL?

The Envy 4512, 4513, 4516, 4520 and 4522 to 4528; the DeskJet 1110, 1112, 2130, 2132, 3630, 3632, 3634 and 3637; and the OfficeJet 3830, 3833, 4650, 4652, 4655, 5212, 5252, 5255 and 5258. Our Envy 4512 guide covers the 4511's closest sibling. These are the U.S. models; the same printers sold in other regions can take different numbers.

What Envy 4511 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Will the new HP 63/65 cartridges fit?

Yes. HP says the combined HP 63/65 cartridge works in every printer that took HP 63, and Quill lists the Envy 4511 for the new 63/65XL black. It's rated at about 300 pages, fewer than the 480 or so listed for the older 63XL black, so check the number on the box. Older cartridges labeled only HP 65 still don't fit.

Should I buy HP 63 or HP 63XL?

Both fit. The 63XL lasts about two and a half times as long and costs less per page, so it's the better buy unless you print very little. Ink that sits unused for months can dry out, which is the only real case for the smaller size.

Will remanufactured cartridges work?

The Envy 4511 isn't an HP+ printer, so there's no rule tying it to Original HP ink. It also wasn't among the models named in HP's Canadian dynamic security settlement, and we found no HP statement that it uses dynamic security. Our remanufactured 63XL cartridges keep the original HP chip.

Why is it so expensive to run?

HP 63 cartridges are small. TechGearLab tested the closely related Envy 4520 at about 8¢ a black page and 11¢ a color page with HP's own ink, the highest lifetime cost in its test group. XL or remanufactured cartridges bring that down a lot.

Envy 4511 quirks worth knowing

  • HP's product number for the 4511 is K9H50A. HP's store lists it as discontinued.
  • HP's specs for the Envy 4520, its close sibling, list print, copy, scan, Wi-Fi, a 2.2-inch display and automatic two-sided printing, at up to 9.5 pages a minute in black and 6.8 in color (ISO). There's no document feeder and no fax.
  • TechGearLab found the 4520's output arm too narrow, so sheets can slide onto the floor on longer print jobs.
  • Small text can look fuzzy with ink bleeding at the edges, according to TechGearLab, while photos and graphics came out well.
