What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 3632 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 3632 uses two cartridges: HP 63 Black and HP 63 Tri-Color. The original high-yield HP 63XL cartridges fit the same slots and print about two and a half times as many black pages (about 430 against 170). Since July 2026 HP sells the combined HP 63/65 line instead, which also fits the 3632 but is rated for fewer pages.
2026 change: HP has merged HP 63 and HP 65 into a single HP 63/65 cartridge line and is phasing out the old HP 63. HP says the new cartridges work in every printer that took HP 63 or HP 65, including the DeskJet 3632, with no settings to change. They are rated for fewer pages: about 300 for the 63/65XL black (B7RT5AN) and about 100 for the tri-color (B7RT2AN), which has no XL version. Original HP 63 cartridges, including the 63XL we remanufacture, still fit.

The four HP 63 part numbers are HP's original line, which HP is phasing out. The HP 63/65 cartridges replace them and have no XL tri-color.
The DeskJet 3632 belongs to the DeskJet 3630 series, so it takes exactly the same ink as the DeskJet 3630 and DeskJet 3634. HP 63 also fits the DeskJet 1112 and 2130 families, the ENVY 4510 and 4520 series, and the OfficeJet 3830 and 4650 series. Each HP 63 cartridge has its own printhead built in, so a fresh cartridge often fixes print-quality problems on its own.
How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 3632
- Turn the printer on and lift the front access door. Wait for the carriage to glide to the center and stop.
- Press down on the cartridge you're replacing to release it, then pull it toward you and out of the slot.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the pink tab to remove the plastic tape. Don't touch the nozzles or the copper contacts.
- Slide it into its slot, nozzles first and angled slightly up, with tri-color on the left and black on the right, and push until it clicks.
- Close the door. Load plain paper and let the printer print and scan its alignment page if it asks.
Troubleshooting Tips
Cartridge not recognized or "incompatible cartridge": Pull the cartridge, make sure all the tape is gone, wipe the copper strip with a dry lint-free cloth and reseat it firmly. Still stuck? See printer says ink cartridge not recognized.
Streaks, gaps or missing colors: Run "Clean Cartridges" from the HP Smart app or the printer's Tools. Because the printhead is in the cartridge, a cartridge that stays streaky after two cleanings is usually the problem, not the printer. More in faded or streaky prints.
Color tint on everything: One color in the tri-color cartridge has run out or clogged. Print a quality report to see which, and read printer printing the wrong colors.

Will the new HP 63/65 cartridges fit my DeskJet 3632?
Yes. HP says HP 63/65 works in every printer that took HP 63 or HP 65, with no settings to change. Only the original, pre-2026 HP 65 cartridges won't fit the 3632.
Is there still an XL color cartridge?
Not in HP's new line. The HP 63/65 tri-color comes in one size, rated about 100 pages. The original 63XL tri-color (F6U63AN, about 300 pages) is still sold while stock lasts, and we sell it remanufactured.
Prints look bad right after I put in a new cartridge. What should I do?
HP says to give the printer a few hours to finish its automatic servicing, then print again. It prints an alignment page after a cartridge change, and you can also run alignment from HP Printer Assistant or HP Printer Utility.
Can I clean the cartridge contacts with alcohol?
No. HP says not to use alcohol or platen cleaner on the contacts and not to clean the nozzle plate. Clean one cartridge at a time, and don't leave a cartridge out of the printer for more than 30 minutes.
What replaced the DeskJet 3632?

DeskJet 3632 quirks worth knowing
- HP warns not to remove the copper electrical strip or put the protective tape back on an HP 63 cartridge. Either causes clogs and contact failures.
- Turn the printer off with its own Power button, not a power strip. HP says that is how the cartridges get capped and serviced properly.
- Outside North America, the same DeskJet 3630 series takes HP 302 cartridges instead of HP 63, so a 3632 bought abroad needs a different cartridge.
- HP's own page for the original HP 63 tri-color gives two yields, about 150 pages in the specs and up to 165 in the bullet points, which is why retailers disagree.

Setup cartridges that come in the box hold less ink than retail cartridges, and the first set primes the system. Your second set will last noticeably longer, especially if it's XL.
Does using remanufactured ink void my HP warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP can't void your printer warranty just because you used third-party cartridges.
