Why Is My Printer Printing Streaks? How to Fix It

Streaks, lines, or smudges running through your printouts are one of the most common printer complaints — and one of the most fixable. In most cases, streaking comes down to a clogged nozzle, a misaligned printhead, or a worn part that's easy to identify once you know what to look for.

Work through these steps in order, from quickest to most involved, to track down the cause.

Short Answer

Most streaking is caused by dried or clogged ink nozzles. Run your printer's built-in cleaning cycle first, then check ink or toner levels and run a printhead alignment. If streaks continue, the printhead, drum, or a roller may need manual cleaning or replacement.

1. Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle

Every modern printer has a built-in cleaning function, usually found in the printer's maintenance or utility software on your computer, or in the printer's own settings menu. This cycle pushes ink through the nozzles to clear minor clogs. Run it once, print a test page, and if streaks remain, run it a second time — but avoid repeating it more than two or three times in a row, since each cycle uses ink.

2. Check Your Ink or Toner Levels

Low ink is one of the most common causes of light streaking or partial lines across a page, especially in one color. Check your levels through the printer's software or control panel, and replace any cartridge that's low, even if it isn't completely empty.

3. Run a Printhead Alignment

A misaligned printhead often causes thin white lines, uneven color bands, or text that looks slightly doubled. Most printer software includes an "align printhead" or "align cartridges" tool that prints a test pattern and recalibrates automatically — it takes about a minute and uses very little ink.

4. Clean the Printhead Manually

If automatic cleaning cycles don't help, and your printer has a removable printhead (common on many HP and Canon inkjets), remove it per your manual and gently wipe the nozzle plate with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Let it air dry fully before reinstalling. Never use tap water, alcohol, or paper towels, which can leave residue or scratch the delicate nozzles.

5. Check for Dirty or Worn Rollers

If streaks or smudges repeat at regular intervals down the page, a roller inside the printer — not the printhead — is often the culprit, picking up ink or toner and depositing it in a pattern. Open the printer and wipe accessible rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water.

6. Use Quality, Compatible Paper

Very glossy, very thin, or damp paper can cause ink to smear or absorb unevenly, creating streaks that have nothing to do with the printer itself. Try a fresh ream of standard paper to rule this out before assuming a hardware problem.

7. For Laser Printers: Check the Drum and Toner Cartridge

On laser printers, repeating vertical streaks or lines usually point to a scratched or worn drum unit rather than the toner itself. A single dark or light streak the full length of the page often means the drum has a scratch or the toner cartridge has a crack. Try reseating the toner cartridge first, and inspect the drum for visible marks or damage — a damaged drum will need to be replaced.

When to Replace Ink or Toner
