Printer Printing the Wrong Colors? How to Diagnose and Fix Color Casts
Last Updated:Quick answer: print the printer's own nozzle check or test page from the control panel, not from your computer. If that page has wrong or missing colors, the fault is in the printer — a blocked nozzle, an empty cartridge, or a cartridge in the wrong slot. If the test page is perfect and only your documents come out wrong, the fault is in software — almost always color management being applied twice, or the media type set incorrectly in the driver.
That one test splits the problem in half in about ninety seconds, and it is the step most people skip. Skin tones going magenta, blacks printing green or brown, blues coming out purple, a whole page with a color cast — they all have different causes on the printer side and the software side, and treating a software problem with cleaning cycles just burns ink. Step One: The Test That Splits the Problem
Find your printer's self-test. It must be printed from the printer itself so that the computer, driver and application are removed from the equation.
- HP: Setup → Reports → Print Quality Report, or hold Cancel and press Start Color Copy on older models.
- Canon: Setup → Maintenance → Nozzle Check.
- Epson: Maintenance → Print Head Nozzle Check.
- Brother: Ink or Toner → Test Print → Print Quality Check.
Then read the result:

Printer-Side Causes
Blocked or Partially Blocked Nozzles (Inkjet)
The most common cause by a wide margin. If one color channel is partly blocked, every color mixed from it shifts. Lose cyan and greens turn yellow, blues turn magenta, and neutral grays pick up a warm cast. Lose magenta and reds turn orange while purples turn blue. The nozzle check pattern shows this directly — look for broken or missing lines in a specific color block. Run one cleaning cycle, print another nozzle check, and compare. Two or three cycles is the sensible limit: each one uses a meaningful amount of ink, and if three have not improved it, more will not either. A Cartridge in the Wrong Slot
More common than people admit, particularly on printers with four or six individual cartridges in a row. If the colors are not just off but plainly swapped — reds printing blue, for instance — open the carriage and check each cartridge against the color label on the slot rather than on the cartridge. If the printer refuses the cartridge outright instead of printing the wrong color, that is a different fault — see ink cartridge not recognized.
If a cartridge has been in the wrong slot and has printed, the printhead channel now has the wrong ink in it. On a printer with a removable printhead this usually clears after several cleaning cycles. On a permanent-head printer it can take a great many pages to purge, and on some models it does not fully clear. Worth being careful about at install time.
One Color Empty, Affecting Everything
Color inkjets mix composite blacks and grays from cyan, magenta and yellow as well as black. Run one color dry and every neutral tone shifts. A page where the photos look tinted but the text is fine is a classic sign that one color is empty or nearly so.

A Failed or Leaking Cartridge
Rare, but it happens with any brand. Symptoms: a single color dramatically over-saturated, ink visibly pooled in the carriage, or a color that changed the instant a specific cartridge went in. Take that cartridge out, wipe the contacts and the carriage seat with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinstall. If the fault follows that cartridge, it is faulty — any reputable supplier, ourselves included, will replace it.
Head Alignment
Misalignment usually shows as fuzzy text or banding rather than a color shift, but on photo prints a misaligned head causes colors to lay down slightly offset from each other, which reads as muddy or fringed color. Run the alignment routine from the maintenance menu after replacing any cartridge — it takes two minutes.
Color Laser Printers: Calibration and Registration
Laser printers do not have nozzles, so a color problem there means something different. Color lasers lay down four separate toner layers and align them mechanically, and that alignment drifts.
- Run the calibration routine. Every color laser has one — usually under Setup → Print Quality → Calibrate, or Adjustment → Color Registration. It prints a pattern, reads it with an internal sensor, and corrects itself. Run it whenever colors drift, after moving the printer, and after any toner change.
- Check for a low or empty color toner. Same logic as inkjet: composite blacks and grays shift when one color runs low.
- Check the transfer belt. Colors consistently misregistered in the same direction, or a repeating color defect, can point at a worn transfer belt — see our printer parts glossary.
- Check the drum for one color. On machines with four separate drums, a worn drum on one channel produces a cast in that color only.
Software-Side Causes
Color Management Applied Twice
This is the biggest cause of "the test page is fine but my photos are wrong", and it catches experienced people as well as beginners.
Color management converts colors from the document's space into the printer's space. It should happen once. If your application is set to manage colors and the printer driver is also set to manage colors, the conversion happens twice and the result is a predictable cast — usually magenta or green, and usually most obvious in skin tones and neutrals.
Pick one and turn the other off:
- Let the application manage color (the better option for photo work): in Photoshop's print dialog set Color Handling to "Photoshop Manages Colors" and choose a printer/paper profile. Then, in the driver, turn color management off — on Canon this is "None (No Color Correction)", on Epson "Off (No Color Adjustment)" under Custom, on HP "Application Managed Colors".
- Or let the printer manage color (simpler, fine for documents): set the application to "Printer Manages Colors" and leave the driver on its automatic setting.
If prints come out noticeably magenta or dark from Photoshop or Lightroom and fine from everything else, this is almost certainly it.
Wrong Media Type in the Driver
The media setting does more than people realize: it controls how much ink is laid down, how the printer dries it, and which internal color table it uses. Printing on glossy photo paper with the driver set to "plain paper" produces flat, dull, often color-shifted output because the printer meters ink for an absorbent surface. The reverse — plain paper with a glossy setting — over-inks, and the colors bleed and darken.
Set the media type to match what is actually loaded. This is the single highest-value setting in the whole driver and it costs nothing.
The Wrong Color Space
An image in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB printed through software that assumes sRGB will come out desaturated and shifted. If your photos look right on screen and wrong on paper, check the file's embedded profile. For general use, converting to sRGB before printing gives the most predictable results on consumer printers.
The reverse case: a file with no embedded profile gets assumed to be sRGB, which is usually fine but occasionally not.
Grayscale, Draft and "Save Ink" Settings
Worth ruling out in ten seconds. A driver left in grayscale prints no color at all; economy or draft mode reduces ink coverage and makes everything look washed out and shifted. A Stale or Generic Driver
Windows will happily install a generic class driver that prints but has no idea about your printer's color tables. If colors have been wrong since the day you set the printer up, or since a Windows upgrade, install the manufacturer's full driver package and print again. Application-Level Settings
A few specific ones that account for a lot of complaints:
- Adobe Acrobat: Advanced → "Print as Image" converts the whole page to a bitmap and can shift color badly. Turn it off unless you need it. Also check Color Management → Color Handling in the same dialog.
- Microsoft Word / PowerPoint: a document set to grayscale or "pure black and white" in its own print settings overrides the driver.
- Illustrator / InDesign: CMYK documents printed to an RGB-driven consumer inkjet go through an extra conversion. Proof with the printer's profile before assuming the printer is wrong.
- Chrome: "Print backgrounds" off will drop background colors entirely, which people sometimes read as a color fault.
Sublimation, DTF and Heat-Transfer Printing
If you are printing sublimation or DTF, the rules are different and "wrong colors" is expected behavior that you correct rather than fix.
Sublimation ink looks dull and wrong on the transfer paper — the colors only reach their final appearance after heat pressing, when the dye converts to gas and bonds with the polyester. Judging color from the printed transfer will always mislead you. Beyond that:
- Use an ICC profile matched to your ink, paper and substrate. Sublimation without a profile is guesswork, and the usual result is muddy reds and blues printing purple.
- Turn off the driver's color management when using a RIP or a profile, for exactly the double-management reason above.
- Press time and temperature change color. Under-pressing leaves colors dull; over-pressing shifts and yellows them. If color changed and nothing about the file did, check the press before the printer.
- Substrate matters. Polyester content, coating and base color all change the result. The same file on two different blanks will not match.

Does a Compatible Cartridge Cause Wrong Colors?
The honest version, from a company that sells them: ink formulation genuinely does vary, and a cheap unbranded cartridge can be a slightly different hue from OEM. On text documents and everyday color printing you will not see it. On critical photo work, where you have profiled for a specific ink, switching ink means reprofiling — that is true switching between any two inks, OEM included.
What a compatible cartridge should not do is produce a dramatic cast, swapped colors or a missing channel. If that happened the moment you installed one, put the old cartridge back and confirm. If the old one prints correctly, the new cartridge is at fault and should be replaced under warranty. If the fault persists with the old cartridge, the timing was coincidence and the cause is somewhere else in this guide.

Work Through It In This Order
- Print the printer's own test page from the control panel.
- If it is wrong: check cartridge slots, check levels, run up to three cleaning cycles, run alignment. On a color laser, run calibration.
- If it is right: set the media type in the driver to match the paper actually loaded, and reprint.
- Check grayscale, draft and eco settings are off.
- Check for double color management — turn it off in either the app or the driver, never leave it on in both.
- Convert the image to sRGB and reprint as a control test.
- Reinstall the manufacturer's full driver.
- Test the same file from a different application. If one app is wrong and others are right, the problem is that app's settings.

Why is my printer printing the wrong colors?
Print the printer's own test page from its control panel. If that is wrong, it is a hardware or cartridge issue — usually a blocked nozzle, an empty color, or a cartridge in the wrong slot. Why do my prints come out with a pink or magenta cast?
Classic double color management, especially from Photoshop or Lightroom. Set the application to manage colors and turn color management off in the driver, or vice versa — but not both.
My blacks are printing green or brown. What is that?
On a color inkjet, composite black is mixed from cyan, magenta and yellow. If one of those is low or blocked, the mix shifts. Check levels and run a nozzle check. Selecting "black ink only" in the driver is a quick way to confirm: if that prints a proper black, one of the color channels is at fault. Why does my Epson EcoTank print wrong colors after refilling?
Usually air in the lines or a partially blocked nozzle after the refill, not the ink itself. Run a nozzle check first, then a cleaning cycle, then a power clean if the brand offers one. If you refilled the tanks yourself, do this first next time so you do not clog the head. Confirm each tank was filled with the right color — the tank caps are keyed on newer models specifically because this was a common mistake.
My photos print darker and duller than they look on screen.
Two separate things. Screens are backlit and paper is not, so prints always look darker; that is physics, not a fault. We go through the rest of the causes in why photo prints come out dull. Beyond that, an uncalibrated monitor and the wrong media setting are the usual culprits. Set the correct paper type in the driver, and if the difference is severe, the monitor is the thing to calibrate, not the printer.
Does a color laser need calibrating?
Yes, regularly. Color registration and density drift with temperature, humidity and use. Run the built-in calibration after moving the printer, after a toner change, and any time colors look off. It is free and takes a couple of minutes.
My sublimation prints come out completely the wrong color.
Sublimation ink does not show its final color until after pressing — judging the transfer sheet will always mislead. Use an ICC profile for your ink, paper and substrate, disable color management in the driver so it is not applied twice, and check press time and temperature before suspecting the printer.
Will replacing all my cartridges fix a color problem?
Sometimes, but do the test page first. Replacing four cartridges to solve a driver setting is an expensive way to find out the driver was the problem — and if the cause was a blocked nozzle, new cartridges will not clear it either.
