What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet 4655 Use?

The HP OfficeJet 4655 uses HP 63 and HP 63XL ink cartridges, one black and one tri-color. Since July 2026 HP has been replacing HP 63 with a combined HP 63/65 line, which also fits. It is part of the OfficeJet 4650 series, so it shares its ink with the 4650, 4652 and 4654.

The 4655 is unusual in HP's line-up: it has the document feeder, fax and auto-duplex of an office machine, but the two-cartridge ink system of a home printer. That combination means heavy document use drains the black cartridge fast while tri-color sits nearly full. Buying two 63XL blacks for every one tri-color matches how this printer actually gets used.

How to Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet 4655

1. Turn the printer on — the carriage will not move to the access position if it is powered off.
2. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to slide to the centre and stop.
3. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out.
4. Unwrap the new cartridge and peel off the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or the nozzle plate.
5. Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and press until it clicks firmly into place.
6. Close the door and let the printer run its alignment page. Skipping alignment is the most common cause of banding people blame on the cartridge.

Troubleshooting the HP OfficeJet 4655

ADF pulls multiple sheets at once. The 4655's feeder rollers pick up paper dust quickly. Wipe them with a barely damp lint-free cloth — it fixes most multi-feed complaints on this model.

Black text printing with a colour tint. Set the copy or print quality to "Text" so the printer stops compositing black from the tri-color cartridge.

Print quality drops off after the printer sits unused. Print one colour page every couple of weeks. It costs almost nothing and it keeps the nozzles from drying, which is far cheaper than the deep cleaning cycles required to recover them.

The ink gauge reads low on a brand-new cartridge. Ink level reporting is an estimate, and on compatible cartridges it can read low, unknown, or not at all. Judge by print quality, not by the gauge.

Cartridges That Do Not Fit the HP OfficeJet 4655

These come up constantly in mistaken orders. None of them will work in an HP OfficeJet 4655:

• Old HP 65 / 65XL (labeled HP 65 only) — DeskJet 3700 and Envy 5000 series. The new combined HP 63/65 cartridges do fit the 4655.

HP 63 cartridges are getting hard to find. Will the new HP 63/65 cartridges fit my 4655?

Yes. HP says the combined HP 63/65 cartridges work in every printer that took HP 63 or HP 65, with nothing to change in the printer's settings.

Why does the new XL black run out sooner than my old 63XL did?

It is rated for fewer pages. The old 63XL black (F6U64AN) was rated at about 480 pages; the HP 63/65XL black (B7RT5AN) that replaces it is rated at about 300.

Can I still get a high-yield color cartridge?

Not in HP's new line. HP's 63/65 transition table has no XL tri-color, and the 63/65 tri-color (B7RT2AN) is rated at about 100 pages. We still sell remanufactured HP 63XL tri-color cartridges (F6U63AN) built on original HP shells.

The carriage is stuck and an error code came up after a power cut.

HP's forum advice for the 4650 series is a full power drain: unplug the printer for a few minutes, then plug it straight into a wall outlet. If the carriage still won't move, it is most likely a hardware fault, not an ink problem.

Can I connect the 4655 to my router with a cable?

No. The 4650 series has USB 2.0 and Wi-Fi only. There is no Ethernet port.

OfficeJet 4655 quirks worth knowing

• It is the HP product F1J00A, one of the OfficeJet 4650 series. Everything about the 4650, from the cartridges to the drivers, applies to it.
• It packs a 35-sheet document feeder, fax and automatic two-sided printing behind a 2.2-inch monochrome touchscreen, which is a lot of office hardware for a two-cartridge printer.
• The paper tray holds only 100 sheets, and that is the complaint owners of the 4650 series raise most often.
• It is slow to wake. Tom's Guide timed more than 40 seconds to the first page from idle on the 4650. We found no HP statement that the 4650 series uses dynamic security, and it is not on the printer list in HP's European dynamic-security settlement.

How many pages does an HP 63XL black print?
About 480 pages at 5% coverage, versus roughly 190 for the standard 63. The newer HP 63/65XL black is rated at about 300 pages.

Is the 4655 ink the same as the 4650?
