What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet 5258 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this page's title and description named HP 62 cartridges. The OfficeJet 5258 does not take HP 62. It uses HP 63, which HP now sells as HP 63/65.

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet 5258 uses HP 63 black and tri-color ink cartridges (in the U.S. and Canada). Since July 2026 HP sells them as HP 63/65: the 63/65XL black (B7RT5AN, about 300 pages) and the 63/65 tri-color (B7RT2AN, about 100 pages). Older HP 63XL cartridges still fit and print more pages (about 430 black and 300 tri-color). We sell remanufactured HP 63XL that keeps the original HP chip.

HP OfficeJet 5258 Ink Cartridges at a Glance

The older HP 63 part numbers are being phased out at retail. HP has no XL tri-color in the new 63/65 line, so the older 63XL tri-color is the only high-yield color option.

The HP OfficeJet 5258 takes one black and one tri-color cartridge at a time — a single tri-color unit holds cyan, magenta, and yellow together. The same HP 63 / 63XL family also fits the HP OfficeJet 3830, 4650, 5252 and 5255, the Envy 4520, and DeskJet 1112, 2130 and 3630 series printers. Outside North America the same platform is sold under other model numbers; the European OfficeJet 5232 uses HP 302 cartridges instead.

How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet 5258

1. Power the printer on and open the ink-cartridge access door at the front — the carriage will slide to the center.
2. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it forward and out of its slot.
3. Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the orange tab to remove the protective plastic. Do not touch the gold contacts or copper-colored ink nozzles.
4. Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle (black on the right, tri-color on the left) and push up until you hear it click into place.
5. Close the access door. The printer will automatically print an alignment page — keep it briefly to confirm the print is sharp and the colors are correct.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge missing or damaged" error: Power-cycle the printer with the cartridges installed. If it persists, remove the cartridge, wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water, dry thoroughly, and reinsert at the upward angle until you hear it click.

Streaky or faded prints: From the printer touchscreen go to Setup > Tools > Clean Ink Cartridges. Two cleaning cycles usually resolve clogged nozzles.

Alignment page prints blank or skewed: Confirm you removed the orange protective tab from each new cartridge and that both are seated with a firm click. Then run alignment again from the touchscreen.

Firmware updates rejecting non-HP ink: HP says the OfficeJet 5200 series uses dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with modified or non-HP chips, and that firmware updates may block cartridges that worked before. HP 63 cartridges are disappearing from shelves. What do I buy now?

HP's replacement is the HP 63/65 line: B7RT5AN (63/65XL black, about 300 pages) and B7RT2AN (63/65 tri-color, about 100 pages), or the B87FDAN 2-pack. HP says compatibility is unchanged, and Staples lists the 5258. Our remanufactured HP 63XL cartridges also still fit.

Is there still a high-yield tri-color cartridge?

Not in HP's new line. HP's 63/65 table lists a black, a tri-color, an XL black and a multipack, but no XL tri-color. The older HP 63XL tri-color (F6U63AN) still works if you can find it.

Why did the cartridges that came with the printer run out so fast?

The OfficeJet 5200 series ships with HP 63 setup cartridges rated around 190 pages black and 165 pages tri-color, according to the OfficeJet 5255 listing. Retail cartridges, especially XL, last longer.

Can a firmware update stop my remanufactured cartridges from working?

Yes. HP says the 5200 series uses dynamic security and that future firmware updates may block cartridges with non-HP circuitry, even ones that worked before. Cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like ours, are the safer choice.

• A 35-sheet document feeder and fax on a printer that takes budget HP 63 cartridges is unusual. On the 5255 sibling, fax is black-only with 100 pages of memory.
• HP Instant Ink versions of HP 63 (E5Z02A black, E5Z01A tri-color) are physically larger and can cause fit or jam complaints in this carriage.
• HP's own HP 63/65XL page lists only a few printers (DeskJet 2655/3755, ENVY 5055, OfficeJet 5255), so don't be put off when the 5258 isn't named. Staples lists the 5258 explicitly for B7RT2AN.
• The 5258 is sold as M2U84A on HP.com and as Z4B12A at Costco. The European version, the OfficeJet 5232, takes HP 302 cartridges instead.

Does the HP OfficeJet 5258 use HP 62 ink?
No. HP 62 cartridges are a different shape and will not fit. The 5258 uses HP 63 / 63XL in North America (HP 302 / 302XL in Europe and other regions).

Does using remanufactured HP 63XL ink void my HP OfficeJet 5258 warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty solely because you use compatible or remanufactured cartridges. If a third-party cartridge causes printer damage, that specific damage isn't covered, but the rest of the warranty remains intact.

How many pages do HP 63XL cartridges actually print?
