What Ink Does the HP Envy 4512 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide listed HP 63 yields of about 190 pages black and 165 tri-color (480 and 330 for 63XL), and said any HP 65 cartridge won't fit. Current HP 63 listings say about 170 and 150 (430 and 300 for 63XL), and the new combined "HP 63/65" cartridges do fit the 4512.
The HP Envy 4512 uses HP 63 and HP 63XL ink cartridges — one black, one tri-color. It shares its ink with the Envy 4520 and 4525, which is worth knowing because cartridge listings mention the 4520 far more often than the 4512.
2026 change: HP has merged HP 63 and HP 65 into a single HP 63/65 cartridge line and is phasing out the old HP 63. HP says the new cartridges work in every printer that took HP 63, and Staples and Quill list the ENVY 4512 as compatible. They are rated for fewer pages: about 100 pages for the new tri-color (B7RT2AN) and 300 for the new high-yield black (B7RT5AN). The earlier HP 63 and 63XL cartridges, including the 63XL we remanufacture, still fit.

A common mix-up is worth clearing up here: the Envy 4500 series (4500, 4501, 4502) uses HP 61, while the Envy 4512 and 4520 use HP 63. The model numbers look close enough that people buy the wrong one regularly. If your printer is a 4512, the cartridge you want says 63 or 63XL on the box, or "63/65" on HP's 2026 packaging.

How to Replace the Ink in the HP Envy 4512
- Turn the printer on — the carriage will not move to the access position if it is powered off.
- Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to slide to the centre and stop.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and peel off the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or the nozzle plate.
- Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and press until it clicks firmly into place.
- Close the door and let the printer run its alignment page. Skipping alignment is the most common cause of banding people blame on the cartridge.
Troubleshooting the HP Envy 4512
"Incompatible cartridge" straight out of the box. Confirm you have HP 63 and not HP 61 — the two are frequently shelved together and the 4512 will reject a 61.
Print quality drops off after the printer sits unused. Print one colour page every couple of weeks. It costs almost nothing and it keeps the nozzles from drying, which is far cheaper than the deep cleaning cycles required to recover them.
The ink gauge reads low on a brand-new cartridge. Ink level reporting is an estimate, and on compatible cartridges it can read low, unknown, or not at all. Judge by print quality, not by the gauge.
Cartridges That Do Not Fit the HP Envy 4512
These come up constantly in mistaken orders. None of them will work in an HP Envy 4512:
- Older HP 65 / 65XL labeled only "65" (DeskJet 3700 and Envy 5000 series). The new combined "HP 63/65" cartridges do fit.
- HP 67 / 67XL — DeskJet 2700e and Envy 6000e series
- HP 62 / 62XL — Envy 5540 and OfficeJet 200 series

The new box says "HP 63/65." Will it fit my ENVY 4512?
Yes. HP says HP 63/65 replaces both HP 63 and HP 65 with the same printer compatibility, and Staples and Quill list the ENVY 4512 for the 63/65 tri-color and the 63/65XL black.
Is there still a high-yield tri-color for the 4512?
Only the earlier HP 63XL tri-color (F6U63AN), which Staples now shows as discontinued, and remanufactured versions of it like ours. HP's 63/65 line so far pairs an XL black with a standard tri-color of about 100 pages.
Why does the new 63/65XL black print fewer pages than my old 63XL?
Because it holds less. HP rates the 63/65XL black at about 300 pages. The earlier 63XL black is rated about 430 on current listings, and 480 on older HP pages.
Will remanufactured cartridges keep working after HP's change?
The 4512 predates HP+, so there is no Original-ink-for-life requirement. HP hasn't said whether the new 63/65 cartridges use different chips. Our remanufactured 63XL cartridges reuse the original HP chip.
Can I still buy an ENVY 4512 new?
No. HP's store lists the ENVY 4512 (K9H49A) as discontinued. For the sibling ENVY 4520, HP points shoppers to the ENVY 6055, which takes HP 67 instead of HP 63.
ENVY 4512 quirks worth knowing
- HP's product number for the ENVY 4512 is K9H49A. The ENVY 4520 (F0V69A) is its better-known twin, and cartridge listings mention the 4520 far more often.
- Since the 2026 change, a correct cartridge for the 4512 can have "65" on the box. Older cartridges labeled only HP 65 still don't fit.
- HP has published two sets of HP 63 yields: 190 / 165 pages (480 / 330 for XL) in older printer copy, and about 170 / 150 (430 / 300) on current cartridge listings.
- Running cost is the weak spot. TechGearLab measured the ENVY 4520 among the most expensive printers to run in its test, because HP 63 cartridges are small.
