Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 1112 uses HP 63 Black and HP 63 Tri-color ink cartridges. For a much lower cost per page, choose the HP 63XL high-yield versions — they deliver roughly 2x the pages of standard HP 63 cartridges and are the best value for any home or student printer.
2026 change: In July 2026 HP merged HP 63 and HP 65 into a single HP 63/65 cartridge line and is phasing out the old HP 63. HP says the new cartridges work in every printer that took HP 63, including the 1112, but they are rated for fewer pages: about 300 pages for the 63/65XL Black (B7RT5AN) and about 100 for the 63/65 Tri-color (B7RT2AN). There is no XL tri-color in the new line. Older HP 63 cartridges still work.

How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 1112
- Power the printer on and open the ink-cartridge access door on the front of the printer — the carriage will slide to the center.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it forward and out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the orange tab to remove the protective plastic. Do not touch the gold contacts or copper-colored ink nozzles.
- Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle (black on the right, tri-color on the left) and push up until you hear it click into place.
- Close the access door. The printer will automatically print an alignment page — hold onto it briefly to confirm the print is sharp and colors are correct.

“Cartridge missing or damaged” error: Power-cycle the printer with the cartridges installed. If it persists, remove the cartridge, wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water, dry thoroughly, and reinsert at the upward angle until you hear it click.
Streaky or faded prints: Run the cartridge cleaning tool from the HP printer software on your computer. Two cleaning cycles usually resolve clogged nozzles. A third cycle is safe but rarely needed.

- The new 63/65XL Black is rated for about 300 pages, well below the legacy 63XL Black's 430, and the new line has no XL tri-color. A 63XL, where you can still get one, gives more pages per cartridge.
- HP recommends 50–200 pages a month against a 1,000-page maximum duty cycle. Draft mode reaches 20 pages a minute in black.
- There is no Wi-Fi and no scanner. Everything runs through the USB cable to your computer, so it cannot print from a phone on its own.
