What Ink Does the HP ENVY 5643 Use?

Quick answer: The HP ENVY 5643 e-All-in-One uses two cartridges: an HP 62 or HP 62XL black and an HP 62 or HP 62XL tri-color. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured HP 62XL Black, HP 62XL Tri-color and a 62XL 2-pack.

The 5643 (HP product number B9S63A) is part of the ENVY 5640 family. HP's support documents list it with the ENVY 5640, 5642, 5644 and 5646, and it shares HP 62 with the ENVY 5660, ENVY 7640 and OfficeJet 5740. The 5642 appears on HP's European cartridge lists, while HP's U.S. store has its own page for the 5643. HP's U.S. 62XL page names the ENVY 5540, 5660 and 7640 but not any 5640-series model, so don't rely on that list to find your printer. European HP 62 cartridges end in AE instead of AN, and HP region-codes them, so buy U.S. AN cartridges for a U.S. printer.

Discontinued. HP's U.S. store lists the ENVY 5643 (B9S63A) as discontinued. Swedish retailer Inet listed the ENVY 5640 in September 2014, and Expert Reviews tested the 5640 in January 2015. We couldn't confirm the 5643's own launch date or price. On October 21, 2026, Staples still listed original HP 62XL black and tri-color cartridges.

What Ink Cartridges Does the HP ENVY 5643 Take?

Cartridge HP part no. Approx. yield Castle Ink option
HP 62 Black C2P04AN ~200 pages —
HP 62XL Black (high-yield) C2P05AN ~600 pages Remanufactured HP 62XL Black
HP 62 Tri-color C2P06AN ~165 pages —
HP 62XL Tri-color (high-yield) C2P07AN ~415 pages Remanufactured HP 62XL Tri-color
HP 62XL Black + Tri-color 2-pack — ~600 / 415 pages Remanufactured 62XL 2-pack
HP 62XL Black MICR (check printing, optional) C2P05AN ~600 pages Remanufactured HP 62XL Black MICR

Tri-color goes on the left, black on the right. Yields are HP's ISO figures. We don't stock the standard 62; the XL fits the same slots. The MICR black is only for printing checks. This is not an HP+ printer. The HP 62 models weren't among the printers named in HP's dynamic security class settlements in Canada and Europe, and we found no HP statement that this series uses dynamic security. Our remanufactured 62XL cartridges keep the original HP chip.

Are HP 62XL Cartridges Worth It?

Yes. The 62XL black prints about 600 pages against 200 for the standard 62, and the 62XL tri-color about 415 pages against 165. On October 21, 2026, Staples listed HP's 62XL black at $62.89 (about 10.5¢ a page) and 62XL tri-color at $64.89 (about 15.6¢ a page). 4inkjets listed HP's standard 62 black at $24.99 (about 12.5¢ a page) and 62 tri-color at $36.99 (about 22.4¢ a page). Our remanufactured 62XL black is $22.99, about 3.8¢ a page, and our 62XL tri-color is $23.99, about 5.8¢ a page. Our 62XL 2-pack is $44.99, so it is now the cheaper way to buy both. The two singles add up to $46.98.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP ENVY 5643?

  1. Turn the printer on and load plain paper in the main tray.
  2. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
  3. Press down on the cartridge you're replacing to release it, then pull it out of its slot. Tri-color goes on the left, black on the right.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape by its pink tab. Don't touch the copper contacts or the nozzles.
  5. Slide the cartridge into its slot until it clicks, close the door, and let the printer run its alignment when asked.

What ENVY 5643 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for the ENVY 5640 series in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is the 5643 the same printer as the 5640?

For ink, yes. HP groups the 5643 with the 5640, 5642, 5644 and 5646 in its support documents, and all of them take HP 62 and 62XL. We couldn't find an HP list of what, if anything, differs.

It keeps saying 'Close Tray'.

HP says the message appears when the main input tray isn't fully closed. Push the tray in until it seats. HP lists the 5643 among the affected models.

Why is two-sided printing so slow?

That's normal for this design. Tech Advisor measured about a 42% drop in speed with automatic two-sided printing on the ENVY 5640.

Can I plug it into my router with a cable?

No. Reviewers of the ENVY 5640 noted there's no wired Ethernet port, so it connects over Wi-Fi or USB.

A cartridge from my other printer won't work in it.

If HP's Cartridge Protection setting was turned on in the first printer, the cartridge is locked to that printer. Use a fresh cartridge, and turn the setting off if you plan to move cartridges between printers.

ENVY 5643 quirks worth knowing

  • It has a 2.65-inch color touchscreen. Expert Reviews liked it, while Tech Advisor found some of its small icons hard to follow.
  • Automatic two-sided printing is standard.
  • Expert Reviews found the setup cartridges ran out quickly in testing, so plan to buy XL cartridges soon after setup.
  • Scanning is the weak point. Expert Reviews found it slow and the scan software basic.
  • The 'e' in e-All-in-One refers to HP's web features such as ePrint. The printer predates HP+.
