What Ink Does the HP ENVY 5642 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP ENVY 5642 uses HP 62 (standard) or HP 62XL (high-yield) black and tri-color ink cartridges. Castle Ink sells remanufactured HP 62XL that keeps the original HP chip. U.S. shipping is free on orders over $50, and orders placed by 4 PM ET ship the same day.
The ENVY 5642 is a home all-in-one from HP's ENVY 5640 series. HP's U.S. cartridge pages list the ENVY 5540, 5660 and 7640 rather than the 5640 or 5642, which is why searching the exact model number sometimes turns up nothing. HP 62 is still the right cartridge; HP even rates HP 62XL yields in an ENVY 5640.

HP ENVY 5642 Ink Cartridges at a Glance
| Cartridge | Color | Approx. Yield |
|---|---|---|
| HP 62 (C2P04AN) | Black | ~200 pages |
| HP 62 (C2P06AN) | Tri-Color | ~165 pages |
| HP 62XL (C2P05AN) | Black | up to 600 pages |
| HP 62XL (C2P07AN) | Tri-Color | up to 415 pages |
How tri-color cartridges work: cyan, magenta and yellow share one housing. When any single color runs out the whole cartridge is finished, even with ink left in the other two. If you mostly print text, setting the driver to black-only or greyscale is the cheapest change you can make.
The Standard HP 62 Is a Bad Buy
At 165–200 pages, standard HP 62 is barely more than a setup cartridge, and it usually sells for well over half the XL price. HP 62XL is three times the black pages and two and a half times the color. There is no volume at which standard makes sense.
62, 63 or 64?
These three HP families look almost identical and none of them interchange. HP 62 is the ENVY 5540/5640/7640 series and OfficeJet 200/250 mobile printers. HP 63 is the DeskJet 2130/3630 and ENVY 4520 series, and since July 2026 HP sells it as the merged HP 63/65 line. HP 64 is the ENVY Photo 6200/7100/7800 series. Check the number on the cartridge you are replacing, not the shape.
Is the ENVY 5642 Discontinued?
Yes, HP has discontinued it and names no successor. HP 62 cartridges remain easy to find.
What ENVY 5642 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Why does my ENVY 5642 jam on the second page of a multi-page job?
HP's suggested steps are a full power reset (unplug for 60 seconds and plug straight into a wall outlet), a firmware update and checking how the paper is loaded. The owner's thread never confirmed a fix, and owners of the sibling ENVY 5540 and 5660 report the same false jams.
After a cartridge change it says it can't communicate with the cartridge. Is it the ink?
Not always. HP points owners to its faulty-cartridge troubleshooting first. If a known-good cartridge still gives the error, HP says it may be a printer hardware fault that needs service.
Did a firmware update cause cartridge errors on the 5640 series?
In 2021 HP staff said there had been no recent firmware problem with the ENVY 5640 and blamed a likely defective color cartridge.
Does the 5642 have a document feeder or fax?
No. The scanner is a flatbed with no feeder, and there is no fax. It does have a separate 15-sheet photo tray and an SD card slot.
ENVY 5642 quirks worth knowing
- HP measured its official HP 62XL page yields in an ENVY 5640, the series the 5642 belongs to.
- The ENVY 5642 is the B9S64A model, sold mainly in Europe. HP's U.S. HP 62XL page names the ENVY 5540, 5660 and 7640 but not the 5640 or 5642, so don't rely on HP's compatibility list to find it.
- A 15-sheet photo tray for 4 x 6 in paper sits alongside the 125-sheet main tray, so you don't have to unload plain paper to print photos.
- It has an SD memory card slot for printing photos without a computer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What ink does the HP ENVY 5642 use?
HP 62 or HP 62XL, in black and tri-color.
How many pages does HP 62XL print?
Up to 600 pages black and 415 tri-color, against roughly 200 and 165 for standard HP 62.
Is there an HP 62XXL?
No. HP's 62 line is standard and XL only.
Can I use compatible HP 62XL cartridges?
This is not an HP+ printer, and we found no HP statement that it blocks non-HP cartridges. Remanufactured HP 62XL that keeps the original HP chip, like ours, is the safer choice.
Will HP 63 or HP 64 fit?
No. They are different cartridge families despite looking similar.
