What Ink Does the HP ENVY 7645 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said compatible cartridges work normally in the ENVY 7645 because it is not an HP+ printer. The ENVY 7640 series has HP dynamic security, and owners have had cartridges with non-HP chips rejected.

Quick answer: The HP ENVY 7645 uses HP 62 (standard) or HP 62XL (high-yield) black and tri-color ink cartridges. Castle Ink sells remanufactured HP 62XL cartridges that keep the original HP chip. U.S. shipping is free on orders over $50, and orders placed by 4 PM ET ship the same day.

The ENVY 7645 is a photo-capable home all-in-one with a document feeder and duplex printing, from HP's ENVY 7640 series.

Discontinued. The 7645 was the Costco version of the ENVY 7640, which HP no longer sells. HP's store points to the ENVY Inspire 7955e as the newer model.

HP ENVY 7645 Ink Cartridges at a Glance

Cartridge Color Approx. Yield
HP 62 (C2P04AN) Black ~200 pages
HP 62 (C2P06AN) Tri-Color ~165 pages
HP 62XL (C2P05AN) Black up to 600 pages
HP 62XL (C2P07AN) Tri-Color up to 415 pages

How tri-color cartridges work: cyan, magenta and yellow share one housing. When any single color runs out the whole cartridge is finished, even with ink left in the other two. If you mostly print text, setting the driver to black-only or greyscale is the cheapest change you can make.

The Standard HP 62 Is a Bad Buy

At 165–200 pages, standard HP 62 is barely more than a setup cartridge, and it usually sells for well over half the XL price. HP 62XL is three times the black pages and two and a half times the color. There is no volume at which standard makes sense.

62, 63 or 64?

These three HP families look almost identical and none of them interchange. HP 62 is the ENVY 5540/5640/7640 series and OfficeJet 200/250 mobile printers. HP 63 is the DeskJet 2130/3630 and ENVY 4520 series; in 2026 HP folded it into a combined HP 63/65 line. HP 64 is the ENVY Photo 6200/7100/7800 series. Check the number on the cartridge you are replacing, not the shape.

Is the ENVY 7645 Discontinued?

Yes. HP has discontinued the ENVY 7640 series, and its store page points to the ENVY Inspire 7955e as the newer model. HP 62 cartridges remain easy to find.

What ENVY 7645 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

How is the ENVY 7645 different from the ENVY 7640?

It is the Costco version of the 7640. It is the same printer and takes the same HP 62 cartridges, but Costco boxed it with a phone cord and a USB cable.

Will cheaper non-HP cartridges work in it?

Not reliably. The 7640 series has HP dynamic security, and HP told an owner on its forum that there is no firmware patch to turn it off. Remanufactured cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like ours, are the safer choice.

It keeps reporting a paper jam, but nothing is stuck.

Owners on HP's forum report false jam errors on this series. Clear the paper path under the cartridge access door and check that the carriage moves freely. If the error comes back, the encoder strip or rollers may need cleaning.

Can the document feeder scan both sides of a page?

No. The 25-sheet feeder scans one side only. Printing is a different story: the 7645 prints on both sides automatically.

What does HP suggest as a replacement?

HP's store page for the discontinued ENVY 7640 points to the ENVY Inspire 7955e as the newer model.

ENVY 7645 quirks worth knowing

  • It has a separate 15-sheet photo tray for 4x6 and 5x7 paper above the 125-sheet main tray, so you can leave photo paper loaded.
  • The document feeder takes legal-size originals (8.5 x 14 in), but the flatbed glass tops out at 8.5 x 11.7 in.
  • It has extras most home inkjets of its era skipped: Ethernet, a memory-card slot, NFC touch-to-print and a 3.5-inch touchscreen.
  • The ENVY 7640 was not on HP's list of printers eligible for the optional update that removed dynamic security, so there is no official way to switch it off.
