Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said the DeskJet 4530 uses HP 62 and HP 62XL cartridges. It uses HP 652 Ink Advantage cartridges: 652 Black (F6V25AE, about 360 pages) and 652 Tri-color (F6V24AE, about 200 pages).
Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 4530 (sold as the HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4530/4535) uses HP 652 Black (F6V25AE, about 360 pages) and HP 652 Tri-color (F6V24AE, about 200 pages) Ink Advantage cartridges. It does not take HP 62. If your printer was bought in the U.S., check the model name on the front: the ENVY 4520 takes HP 63 (now HP 63/65) and the OfficeJet 4630 takes HP 61.
Corrected: The DeskJet 4530 takes HP 652 cartridges, not HP 62. This page used to list HP 62, and HP 62 will not fit. The 4530 is sold outside the U.S. as the HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4530/4535.

The DeskJet 4530 takes one black and one tri-color cartridge at a time; the tri-color cartridge holds cyan, magenta and yellow together. HP 652 comes in one size only. We could not find an XL version.
How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 4530
- Power the printer on and open the ink-cartridge access door at the front — the carriage will slide to the center.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it forward and out of its slot.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the orange tab to remove the protective plastic. Do not touch the gold contacts or copper-colored ink nozzles.
- Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle (black on the right, tri-color on the left) and push up until you hear it click into place.
- Close the access door. The printer will automatically print an alignment page — keep it briefly to confirm the print is sharp and the colors are correct.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Cartridge missing or damaged" error: Power-cycle the printer with the cartridges installed. If it persists, remove the cartridge, wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water, dry thoroughly, and reinsert at the upward angle until you hear it click.
Streaky or faded prints: From the printer touchscreen go to Setup > Tools > Clean Ink Cartridges. Two cleaning cycles usually resolve clogged nozzles. A third cycle is safe but rarely needed.
Alignment page prints blank or skewed: Confirm you removed the orange protective tab from each new cartridge and that both are seated with a firm click. Then run alignment again from the touchscreen.
Cartridge not recognized: HP 652 is a regional cartridge. Buy 652 cartridges sold in the region where you bought the printer. We found no source confirming that U.S. HP 63 cartridges work in it, even though they look alike.

Can it print on both sides automatically?
Yes. It has a built-in duplexer for automatic two-sided printing.
Does it have a document feeder?
No. Scanning and copying are done on the flatbed glass, one page at a time.

DeskJet 4530 quirks worth knowing
- "Ink Advantage" is HP's name for lower-cost cartridges sold in markets outside the U.S. HP 652 also fits the DeskJet Ink Advantage 1115, 2135, 3635, 3835 and 4675.
- Some retailers list HP 652 as fitting U.S. printers such as the DeskJet 1110 and OfficeJet 3830, which take HP 63 in the U.S. That points to the same cartridge body with regional chips. Don't treat those lists as proof that cartridges work across regions.
- It has a 2.2-inch touch display and a quiet mode that slows printing to cut noise.
- HP 652 is not part of HP's July 2026 HP 63/65 merger, so nothing has changed for this printer's cartridges.
