What Is the Difference Between HP 62 and HP 62XL?
Same size, same fit, more ink. The 62XL Black prints about 600 pages against about 200 for the standard 62, and the 62XL Tri-Color about 415 against 165. Because the XL costs far less per page, it's the one to buy unless you print only occasionally.
Is the HP ENVY 7640 Discontinued?
Yes. HP no longer sells the ENVY 7640 new; it dates from 2014. It remains a capable printer, with auto two-sided printing, a document feeder, fax and photo printing, and HP 62 cartridges are still widely available.
What Are the Common Problems With the HP ENVY 7640?

How Do I Replace the Ink Cartridges in My HP ENVY 7640?
- With the printer on, open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it and pull it out toward you.
- Remove the protective tape from the new cartridge without touching the contacts or nozzles.
- Slide it into the matching slot (Tri-Color left, Black right) until it clicks.
- Close the door and follow the on-screen alignment prompts.
Can I Use Remanufactured HP 62XL Cartridges?
Usually, with a caveat. The ENVY 7640 uses HP dynamic security: an HP Community thread shows it rejecting a cartridge with a non-HP chip, and HP staff said no firmware patch removes it on this model. Will the ENVY 7640 connect to a 5 GHz network?
No. HP's datasheet says its Wi-Fi works on 2.4 GHz networks only. If your router is 5 GHz only, use the Ethernet port instead.
Can I load photo paper without emptying the main tray?
Yes. It has a separate 15-sheet photo tray for 4x6 and 5x7 paper, alongside the 125-sheet main tray.
Does the document feeder scan both sides automatically?
No. The 25-sheet feeder scans one side at a time. Printing is automatically two-sided, but scanning and copying are not.
Is there a firmware update that lets it accept non-HP cartridges?
No. On HP's support forum, HP staff said there is no firmware patch to remove dynamic security on the ENVY 7640; HP's 2019 update covered other models only. Cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like our remanufactured 62XL, are the safer choice.

- Besides Wi-Fi, it has an Ethernet port and two USB 2.0 ports, which is more wired connectivity than most home inkjets offer.
- The fax stores up to 100 pages and holds 120 speed dials. There is no handset.
- Copying is much slower than printing: up to 11 copies a minute in black and 5 in color, against 14 and 9 pages a minute for printing.
- HP recommends 300–400 pages a month for best performance, so it suits a busy home office better than a printer that sits idle for weeks.
