What Ink Does the HP Envy 5660 Use?

Quick answer: The HP Envy 5660 uses HP 62 Black and HP 62 Tri-color ink cartridges. For roughly 2.5x the page yield at a much better cost-per-page, choose HP 62XL high-yield cartridges instead.

How to Replace Ink in the HP Envy 5660

  1. Turn on the printer and open the cartridge access door at the front. Wait for the carriage to slide into the center.
  2. Press down on the cartridge you're replacing to release it, then pull it straight out of its slot.
  3. Remove the new HP 62 or 62XL cartridge from its packaging and pull off the orange protective tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
  4. Slide the new cartridge into the slot at a slight upward angle — Black goes on the right, Tri-color on the left — and push gently until it clicks.
  5. Close the cartridge access door. The Envy 5660 will run an alignment cycle and print a calibration page on plain paper. Once it finishes, you're ready to go.

Troubleshooting Tips

Cartridge not recognized: Power-cycle the printer (unplug for 30 seconds, then plug back in). The Envy 5660 often needs a hard reset to re-handshake with a fresh cartridge.

Faded or streaky prints: Run the built-in cleaning cycle from the printer's Tools menu or via HP Smart. Two cycles will usually clear minor clogs.

"Print head failure" or cartridge error: Remove both cartridges, gently wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, and reseat them firmly. Most false errors come from oxidation on the contacts.

Low-ink warning right after a fresh install: HP's ink-level estimator is based on usage, not a physical gauge. It can take 5–10 print jobs to recalibrate. Ignore the warning unless print quality actually drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use HP 62XL cartridges in an Envy 5660 that shipped with HP 62 standard?

Yes. The Envy 5660 accepts both HP 62 standard and HP 62XL high-yield cartridges interchangeably. The XL versions are the same physical size as the standard — they just hold more ink and yield more pages.

Will compatible HP 62XL cartridges void my Envy 5660 warranty?

No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in the United States, using third-party ink does not void your printer warranty. HP can only deny warranty coverage if the third-party cartridge directly caused a specific failure.

How many pages does an HP 62XL print in the Envy 5660?

HP rates the 62XL black at approximately 600 pages and the 62XL tri-color at approximately 415 pages, based on the ISO/IEC 24711 standard at 5% page coverage. Actual yield varies with print density and color usage.

Which other HP printers use HP 62 ink?

HP 62 / 62XL cartridges work in the HP Envy 5540, 5541, 5542, 5543, 5544, 5545, 5547, 5549, 5640, 5642, 5643, 5644, 5660, 5661, 5663, 5664, 5665, 7640, 7643, 7644, 7645, 7855 — as well as the OfficeJet 200, 250, 5740, 5741, 5742, 5743, 5744, 5745, 5746, 8040 mobile and all-in-one models.

Why does my Envy 5660 say low ink right after I install a new cartridge?

HP's ink-level estimator is based on usage telemetry, not a physical ink gauge. After installing a new cartridge, the estimator can take a few print jobs to recalibrate. Ignore the warning unless print quality actually degrades.
