Like the rest of the M203/M227 family it also takes a separate imaging drum, the HP 32A (CF232A), which is not included with the toner and lasts far longer.
Two parts, not one: if your prints have gone bad, check whether the printer is asking for toner or for a drum. Buying a toner cartridge will not fix a worn drum.

The same 30A / 30X toner and 32A drum fit every printer in this family, so you can standardize supplies across the office: the LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdn, M227sdn and M227d, and the single-function LaserJet Pro M203d, M203dn and M203dw.
The M227fdw is the fully loaded model in the line: print, copy, scan and fax, with a 35-sheet document feeder, automatic two-sided printing, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. None of that changes the supplies: the fdw, fdn and sdn all run the same cartridge and the same drum.
How to Replace the Toner
- Power on the M227fdw and lift the scanner assembly, then open the top cover.
- Pull the used HP 30A or 30X cartridge straight out. On this design the toner slides out separately from the drum — do not force the whole assembly.
- Unbox the new cartridge, rock it gently 5–6 times end to end to distribute the toner, and pull the orange sealing tab all the way out.
- Slide the new cartridge back along the guide rails until it clicks. If it stops short, the drum is seated incorrectly — reseat the drum first.
- Close the top cover and lower the scanner. The printer reads the new chip and resets the gauge on its own.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Cartridge low" or a supplies message that never clears: HP reads the level from the cartridge chip. Power-cycle the printer and reseat the cartridge, then check which part the message names: a drum warning won't clear with new toner. HP firmware updates on some other LaserJet Pro models have stopped non-HP-chip toner that worked before, so don't install a firmware update to try to fix a cartridge message.
Repeating marks every few inches down the page: That spacing is the drum circumference, not the toner. Replace the HP 32A imaging drum — a new toner cartridge will reproduce exactly the same defect.
Faded print on one side of the page: Remove the cartridge, rock it side to side to redistribute the remaining toner and reinstall. If it comes back within a few dozen pages the cartridge is genuinely empty.
Scanned copies are streaked but printed pages are clean: That is the scanner glass or the ADF scan strip, not a supplies problem. Wipe both with a lint-free cloth and a little glass cleaner sprayed on the cloth, never on the glass.

It reports a paper jam, but there's no paper inside. What can I try?
Turn it off, unplug it for 60 seconds and check the cartridge area: lift the scanner, open the top cover and take out the toner and drum to look for scraps. If the message keeps coming back with nothing inside, it usually needs service.
