What Toner Does the Xerox WorkCentre 3215 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said the toner clips onto the drum and the two lift out together. They don't. The toner pulls out on its own by its handle, and the drum stays in the printer until you replace it.
The Xerox WorkCentre 3215 uses the Xerox 106R02775 standard-capacity black toner cartridge or the Xerox 106R02777 high-capacity cartridge. It also has a separate drum cartridge, the Xerox 101R00474, which is a different part from the toner and lasts much longer.
Toner and drum are two separate purchases on this printer. A "replace drum cartridge" message will not go away when you fit new toner.

The same cartridges are shared across this generation of small Xerox mono machines: the Phaser 3260 (3260DI and 3260DNI), the Phaser 3052, the WorkCentre 3215 and 3215NI, and the WorkCentre 3225, 3225DN and 3225DNI. If you run more than one of them, a single cartridge covers the fleet.
The WorkCentre 3215 is the entry model in this pair — print, copy, scan and fax, with a 40-sheet document feeder. Xerox lists Wi-Fi and USB as standard, and the NI configuration adds wired Ethernet. Neither variant changes the supplies. One practical difference from the 3225: the 3215 does not print two-sided automatically. It does support manual two-sided printing.
How to Replace the Toner
- Power on the Xerox WorkCentre 3215 and open the front cover.
- Pull the toner cartridge straight out by its handle. The drum stays in the printer; it only comes out when you replace the drum.
- Unbox the new toner cartridge and rock it gently 5–6 times to loosen the toner inside.
- Slide the new toner cartridge in along its guide grooves until it locks into place.
- Close the front cover. The printer will recognize the new cartridge and reset the toner gauge.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Toner is not compatible" or a cartridge-not-recognized error: Pull the toner cartridge out and push it back in firmly until it locks. Clean the chip contacts with a dry cloth if it persists.
Repeating spots or bands at a fixed interval: That is the drum cartridge (101R00474), not the toner. It is rated at around 10,000 pages, so it typically outlasts three high-capacity toner cartridges.
Vertical white streak down every page: Toner has stopped feeding evenly. Remove the cartridge, rock it side to side and reinstall. If the streak returns quickly, the cartridge is empty.
Paper jams at the rear of the machine: Open the rear cover and clear the fuser area, then check that the paper guides in the tray are set tight to the stack. Loose guides are the usual cause of skewed feeds on these compact Xerox machines.

No. Xerox lists automatic two-sided printing as standard only on the WorkCentre 3225. The 3215 does manual two-sided printing.
The cartridge that came with the printer ran out fast. Is that normal?
Yes. The box includes a 1,500-page cartridge, the same size as the standard 106R02775, plus the drum. Switch to the 3,000-page 106R02777 if you print a lot.
How big an original can the document feeder take?
The 40-sheet feeder takes originals from 5.8 × 5.8 in up to 8.5 × 14 in (legal). It scans one side at a time.
Xerox doesn't sell this printer new anymore. What replaced it?
Xerox's product page says the 3215 is no longer sold new and suggests the Xerox B225 as the upgrade.

- The drum isn't cheap. When we checked one retailer, the Xerox 101R00474 drum was $91.99 against $129.99 for a high-capacity 106R02777 toner.
- Walk-up fax needs an analog phone line (a fax cord is in the box), and it supports Secure Fax Receive.
- Xerox rates the duty cycle at up to 30,000 pages a month, but says that's a peak, not a volume to sustain.
