What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet 6600 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet 6600 e-All-in-One (H711a) uses HP 932 / 932XL for black and HP 933 / 933XL for cyan, magenta and yellow — four separate cartridges in total. For most owners the XL versions (932XL Black, 933XL Cyan, 933XL Magenta and 933XL Yellow) are the better buy.

The OfficeJet 6600 is an individual-ink printer: one black cartridge plus three single-color cartridges, so you only replace the color that actually runs out. The black is the HP 932 and the colors are the HP 933 — the numbers are different because the black cartridge is a larger, pigment-based tank, while the colors are smaller dye-based tanks. All four must be installed for the printer to work, even if you only print in black.
The 6600 is a print, copy, scan and fax all-in-one with a 35-page automatic document feeder, a 250-sheet paper tray, a color touchscreen and built-in Wi-Fi with HP ePrint. HP has discontinued it, but it remains a very common small-office machine — which is why 932/933 cartridges are still easy to find.
Standard vs. XL: Which Should You Buy?
Buy XL. The HP 932XL black prints roughly 2.5 times as many pages as the standard 932, and each 933XL color prints roughly 2.5 times as many as a standard 933 — but the XL cartridges cost nowhere near 2.5 times as much. The cartridges are the same physical size and install in the same slots; the XL versions are simply filled with more ink.
The easiest way to restock everything at once is the HP 932XL + 933XL 4-pack, which covers black plus all three colors. If you print checks or bank documents, Castle Ink also carries a 932XL MICR black cartridge made with magnetic ink. HP has pushed firmware updates over the years that can make some printers reject non-HP chips. If your OfficeJet 6600 is set to update automatically, read how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink before you change cartridges.
How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet 6600
- Turn the printer on. Lift the ink cartridge access door at the front of the printer and wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
- Press the tab on the front of the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it up and out of its slot.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull off the orange tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink outlet.
- Slide the cartridge into the slot that matches its colored icon, then push down until it clicks into place.
- Close the access door. The printer may run a short startup and alignment routine — let it finish before printing.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Printhead missing or failed" / "Incompatible printhead": The OfficeJet 6600 has a separate printhead that sits under the cartridges and stays in the printer. Turn the printer off, unplug it for 60 seconds, then lift the carriage latch, remove and reseat the printhead, and reinstall the cartridges. This error is common on aging 6600s and is separate from the ink itself — if reseating does not clear it, the printhead (not the cartridges) has failed.
"Cartridge problem" or "cartridge not recognized": Remove the cartridge, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, and reseat it until it clicks. If the message persists, see printer says ink cartridge not recognized.
Streaks, faded colors or missing lines: Run the printhead cleaning from the printer's Setup > Tools menu, then print a print-quality report. One or two cleanings usually help; running many in a row just wastes ink. More fixes in why is my printer printing faded text and printer printing the wrong colors.
Printer won't print black when one color is empty: The 6600 needs all four cartridges to have ink. Replace the empty color and black printing will resume.
Which Other Printers Use HP 932 / 933 Ink?
The same HP 932/932XL and 933/933XL cartridges fit:
- HP OfficeJet 6100 ePrinter
- HP OfficeJet 6600 e-All-in-One
- HP OfficeJet 6700 Premium
- HP OfficeJet 7110 Wide Format
- HP OfficeJet 7510 Wide Format
- HP OfficeJet 7610 / 7612 Wide Format
Do not confuse HP 932/933 with HP 950/951 (OfficeJet Pro 8100/8600 series) or HP 902 (OfficeJet 6900 series). The cartridges look similar but are not interchangeable.

Bottom Line
The HP OfficeJet 6600 runs on HP 932 black and HP 933 cyan, magenta and yellow. Buy the XL versions — 932XL and 933XL — for the lowest cost per page, keep all four cartridges installed, and treat "printhead" errors as a separate problem from the ink.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is HP 932 the same as HP 933?
No. HP 932 is the black cartridge and HP 933 is the color cartridge (sold as separate cyan, magenta and yellow). The OfficeJet 6600 needs one of each — four in total.
Can I use HP 950 or HP 902 ink in the OfficeJet 6600?
No. HP 950/951 and HP 902 are different cartridge families with different shapes and chips. The OfficeJet 6600 only accepts HP 932 and 933 (standard or XL).
Can I print with only black ink in the OfficeJet 6600?
No. All four cartridges must be installed and contain ink, or the printer will stop.
Does the OfficeJet 6600 use a separate printhead?
Yes. The printhead stays in the printer and the four cartridges sit on top of it, so replacing cartridges does not replace the printhead.
Does using non-HP ink void the warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty only because you used third-party or remanufactured cartridges.
