What Toner Does the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553 Use?

Quick answer: The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553 (M553n, M553dn and M553x) uses four HP 508A toner cartridges, or the high-yield HP 508X, in black, cyan, yellow and magenta. The imaging drum is built into each cartridge, so there is no separate drum to buy. Castle Ink stocks compatible 508X in every color, starting with the 508X Black, plus a 508X four-pack.

The 508 cartridges are big enterprise supplies, and they also fit the M552dn and the M577 MFP family. Don't confuse them with HP 410A/410X (M452, M477) or HP 414A/414X (M454, M479); those are smaller cartridges and won't fit.

What Toner Cartridges Does the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553 Take?

Cartridge HP part no. Approx. yield Castle Ink option

508A Cyan / Yellow / Magenta CF361A / CF362A / CF363A ~5,000 pages each —

Yields are HP's ISO/IEC 19798 figures. We stock the high-yield 508X only; it fits every slot the 508A fits and costs far less per page. A 508X four-pack covers a full set. The printer also takes a separate toner collection unit (HP B5L37A), which is a single-use part.

What Does HP 508 Toner Cost Now?

On October 25, 2026, Staples listed the original HP 508A black at $234.99 (about 3.9¢ a page) and the 508A cyan at $291.99. Our compatible 508X black is $94.95 for 12,500 pages (about 0.8¢ a page), and each 508X color is $94.95 for 9,500 pages (about 1¢ a page).

Toner cartridges at Castle Ink are newly manufactured compatibles. See compatible vs. remanufactured vs. OEM for what that means. Orders placed by 4 PM ET ship the same day, and U.S. orders over $50 ship free.

Using compatible toner: These are HP FutureSmart enterprise printers with a Cartridge Policy setting. If it is set to Authorized HP only, the printer rejects any non-HP cartridge with a 10.0X.30 “Unauthorized cartridge” message. An administrator can switch the policy off under Supplies settings on the control panel or in the Embedded Web Server. A separate Cartridge Protection setting locks a cartridge to one printer or fleet (10.0X.57). Turn the policy off before you install third-party cartridges. Using non-HP toner doesn't void your warranty under U.S. law. More: How to stop HP firmware updates from blocking your ink.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the M553?

  1. Open the front door.
  2. Pull the used cartridge straight out by its handle.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and rock it gently five or six times to spread the toner.
  4. Remove the orange protective shield. Don't touch the green drum.
  5. Support the cartridge from underneath, line it up with its color slot and slide it in until it seats.
  6. Close the front door. The printer reads the new cartridge and calibrates.

Which Other Printers Use HP 508A / 508X?

HP 508 cartridges also fit the Color LaserJet Enterprise M552dn, M553n, M553dn and M553x, and the Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577dn, M577f, Flow MFP M577c and M577z.

What M553 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, support forums and owner reviews, answered in our words.

It says 13.B2.FF, a jam in the right door, but there's no paper inside.

That code means the top-of-page sensor thinks paper is sitting at power-on. Check the right door and transfer area, then pull Tray 2 and look deep in the back for a torn scrap. HP's community experts suggest running the manual sensor test from the service menu to confirm the sensor flag moves freely.

Paper crumples going into the fuser and the log shows 13.B9.D2.

Technicians on CopyTechNet point to the fuser film stalling while the pressure roller keeps turning. On older, high-page-count units the usual fix is a new fuser; check the transfer roller and fuser drive gears too.

My compatible toner shows “Unauthorized cartridge” (10.0X.30).

The Cartridge Policy is set to HP only. Turn it off under Supplies settings or in the Embedded Web Server. A cartridge already marked protected (10.0X.57) only works in the printer or fleet that protected it.

Does the M553n print two-sided automatically?

No. The M553n duplexes manually with driver help. The M553dn and M553x have automatic two-sided printing.

Do I need a separate drum?

No. Each 508 cartridge has its own imaging drum and memory chip, so a new set replaces all four drums.

M553 quirks worth knowing

  • HP rates it at up to 40 pages a minute in black and color, with a duty cycle of up to 80,000 pages a month (2,000–6,000 recommended).
  • The n and dn hold 650 sheets (a 100-sheet multipurpose tray plus a 550-sheet tray). The x adds a second 550-sheet tray, a touchscreen, NFC and Wireless Direct.
  • It's print-only: no scanner, copier or document feeder.
  • HP lists the Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn as the newer model for the n and dn, and the M555x for the x. Both take different toner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What toner does the HP Color LaserJet M553 use?

HP 508A or high-yield 508X in black, cyan, yellow and magenta (CF360–CF363).

Can I mix 508A and 508X cartridges?

Yes. Each color is read separately, so any mix of standard and high-yield cartridges works.

Is HP 508 the same as HP 410 or 414?

No. Those are smaller cartridges for the M452/M477 and M454/M479 and won't fit the M553.
