Quick answer: The Samsung CLP-315 and CLP-315W use Samsung CLT-409S toner in four colors: CLT-K409S black (about 1,500 pages) and CLT-C409S cyan, CLT-M409S magenta and CLT-Y409S yellow (about 1,000 pages each). It also uses a CLT-R409 imaging unit and a CLT-W409 waste toner container, both sold separately.

Yields are Samsung's "up to" figures from its CLP-315/315W spec sheet. The cartridges that came in the box were smaller starters (about 1,000 black and 700 color). Samsung also sold a CLT-P409C four-color pack. HP, which took over Samsung's printer business, sells the same cartridges under "SU" part numbers (the U.S. CLT-K409S is SU141A). Cost Per Page: Samsung vs. Compatible

On October 26, 2026, LD Products listed Samsung's original CLT-K409S at $73.25 (about 4.9¢ a page) and the color cartridges at $45.14 to $50.78 (about 4.5¢ to 5¢ a page each). Our compatible cartridges are $45.95 each: about 3.1¢ a page for black and 4.6¢ per color. A full-color page that uses all four toners runs about 17¢ with ours and about 19¢ with Samsung's. There's no XL to trade up to, so the only way to cut costs on this printer is the cartridge price itself. The imaging unit is the expensive part: it's getting hard to find, and TonerBuzz listed Samsung's at $156 (out of stock).

Will Compatible CLT-409S Toner Work?

Yes, with one caveat. The cartridges carry a chip that the printer reads for toner level. A new compatible cartridge comes with its own chip and installs like Samsung's. Problems mostly show up with refilled cartridges or reused chips, which the printer may refuse with a solid red light. If that happens, reseat the cartridge, make sure it clicks, and check its status in Samsung's SmartPanel software.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the CLP-315?

  1. Turn the printer off and let it cool for a few minutes.
  2. Press the release button and open the front cover all the way.
  3. Hold the empty cartridge by its handles and pull it straight out.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge, rock it gently side to side to spread the toner, and remove the protective cover.
  5. Slide it into the slot that matches its color until it clicks, close the front cover firmly and turn the printer back on.

Keep the cartridge out of bright light for more than a few minutes. If you get toner on clothing, wash it out in cold water; hot water sets it.

Which Other Printers Use CLT-409S Toner?

The Samsung CLP-310, CLP-310N, CLP-315W, CLX-3170FN, CLX-3175, CLX-3175N, CLX-3175FN and CLX-3175FW use the same CLT-409S cartridges. The newer CLP-320 and CLP-325W use the different CLT-407S toner.

Is there a Windows 10 or 11 driver?

Not officially for this model. Owners use the Windows 7 driver from the original CD or HP's Universal Print Driver.

The red light is flashing but I just put in new toner. Why?

Install SmartPanel (it comes with the Windows driver) to read the exact error. Common causes are a cartridge that isn't fully seated, a full waste toner container or a worn imaging unit.

What's the difference between the CLP-315 and CLP-315W?

The CLP-315 is USB only. The CLP-315W adds Wi-Fi and Ethernet and doubles the memory to 64 MB. They use the same toner.
