Canon PGI-280 / CLI-281 Ink: Common Questions

What is the difference between the standard, XL and XXL Canon PGI-280 / CLI-281 cartridges?

PGI-280 pigment black prints about 250 pages and each CLI-281 color about 250; the XL sizes about 400 and 500; the XXL sizes about 600 pigment black and 800 per color. The photo blue cartridge is only used by the six-tank TS8120, TS8220, TS8320 and TS9120. All sizes share the same cartridge body and slot, so you can move between them freely.

Which printers use Canon PGI-280 / CLI-281 ink?

Canon PIXMA TR7520, TR7620, TR8520, TR8620, TS702, TS5120, TS6120, TS6220, TS6320, TS8120, TS8220, TS8320, TS9120, TS9520, TS9521C. Our Find Ink by Printer page has a guide for each model.

Will remanufactured Canon PGI-280 / CLI-281 cartridges work in my printer?

Yes. Each cartridge is an original shell with a working chip, refilled and tested. Keep automatic firmware updates off so a future update can't block third-party cartridges, and if the printer shows a non-genuine-ink message, choose Continue. If a cartridge from us still isn't recognized, contact us and we'll replace or refund it under our 1-year guarantee.

XL or XXL: which should I buy?

XXL in almost every case. It is the same physical cartridge and fits the same slot, but holds the most ink, so each printed page costs least. The smaller sizes only make sense if you print very rarely, since ink can dry out over long idle periods.
