HP 56 and HP 57 are a pair: the 56 goes in the black slot and the 57 in the color slot. They look similar to the newer HP 21 and HP 22, but the two families are not interchangeable — a 57 will be rejected by an HP 22 printer such as the OfficeJet 5600 series or DeskJet F4100 series.

Pair it with an HP 56 Black for documents, or an HP 58 Photo for six-ink photo printing.

Not for the HP DeskJet F4100 series (F4135, F4140, F4180 and similar) or the OfficeJet 5600 series — those printers use the HP 22 Tri-Color, even though some sites list the 57.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an HP 57XL?
No. HP only made the standard 57 tri-color cartridge.

What's the difference between HP 57 and HP 22?
The HP 22 is a smaller tri-color cartridge for newer printers (DeskJet F/D series, OfficeJet 5600 series). The two look alike but use different electronics, so each printer accepts only its own cartridge.

Are remanufactured cartridges as good as the original?

Will using it void my printer warranty?

Some printers display a notice that a non-original or previously used cartridge is installed. Select OK or Continue and print as usual. If a cartridge isn't recognized, remove it, make sure any protective tape is off, wipe the contacts and reinstall it.
