Don't mix these up: HP 72 comes in 69 ml and 130 ml sizes that fit the same slots. It is not the same as HP 727 (DesignJet T920/T930/T1500/T1530/T2500/T2530), which replaced these printers. Matte black is used on uncoated papers; photo black on glossy media. Both stay installed.

Chips, Printer Messages & Installation

Installing: open the ink cartridge cover, lift out the empty cartridge and gently shake the new one before pushing it into the matching color slot until it seats. Close the cover and wait for the printer to finish checking the ink.

Non-HP supply messages: DesignJet printers display a notice when a refilled or non-HP cartridge is installed. Confirm the message on the front panel to keep printing. If a cartridge is not detected, reseat it and check the chip contacts are clean.

Printheads are separate: DesignJet printheads are replaced on their own schedule, not with each ink cartridge. If a color is missing after a new cartridge, run the printhead cleaning from the front panel.

HP 72 printheads are shared by two colors. Matte Black runs through the C9384A (matte black / yellow) printhead, which is replaced separately and is not included.
