What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA MG6220 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MG6220 uses six ink tanks: a PGI-225 pigment black plus CLI-226 black, cyan, magenta, yellow and gray. There are no XL versions in the U.S. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured PGI-225 Pigment Black, CLI-226 Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Gray, and a 6-pack with one of each.
The MG6220 takes the same six tanks as the PIXMA MG6120, MG8120 and MG8220. The MG5220, MG5320 and MX882 use the same tanks minus the gray, so a 5-pack made for them leaves the MG6220 one tank short. European versions of this printer are reported to take PGI-525 and CLI-526, so buy tanks sold for the U.S.

What PIXMA MG6220 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Canon's support pages, reviews and owner reports, answered in our words.
Why does it need a gray tank?
The MG6220 is a six-ink printer. The gray tank improves black-and-white photos, and it has to be installed for the printer to work.
What does error B200 mean?
It points to a print head fault, which is known on this PIXMA generation. Turn the printer off and on, reseat the print head and check for a failed tank. If B200 comes back, it usually needs a new print head, which is rarely worth it on a printer this old.
It says a tank is low, but it still prints fine.
Reviewed.com found the MG6220 asks for new tanks early. Keep printing until it says the ink has run out, and replace only the tank it flags.
Wi-Fi setup won't accept my password.
Reviewed.com found setup hard without Canon's wireless utility. Use the setup CD or Canon's utility, or connect with your router's WPS button.
PIXMA MG6220 quirks worth knowing
- Canon rates it at about 12.5 pages a minute in black and 9.3 in color, and a borderless 4x6 in about 20 seconds.
- It prints on printable CDs and DVDs with its disc tray, and prints and copies two-sided automatically.
- It has a 3-inch tilting color screen, memory card slots, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and AirPrint.
- There's no document feeder and no fax, so scanning is flatbed only. Paper loads from a 150-sheet front cassette or a 150-sheet rear feeder.
