What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA MX882 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MX882 office all-in-one uses five separate ink tanks: one PGI-225 pigment black for text and four CLI-226 dye tanks (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) for color and photos. Castle Ink stocks a remanufactured PGI-225/CLI-226 5-pack for $24.99, plus every tank on its own.
The MX882 shares its ink with the MX892, MG5320 and MG6120. Canon never sold XL versions of PGI-225 or CLI-226 in the U.S. In Europe, the same printer is the MX885 and takes PGI-525 and CLI-526, which won't work in a U.S. MX882.

Is Buying Ink Separately Worth It?
Yes, because you only replace the color that runs out. On October 14, 2026, Staples listed Canon's PGI-225 at $22.99 and a single CLI-226 cyan at $18.00, so a full set of five original tanks costs roughly $95. Our remanufactured PGI-225 is $7.99, and the full 5-pack is $24.99.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the Canon PIXMA MX882?
- Turn the printer on and lift the scanning unit until it locks open; the print head holder moves to the center.
- Press the tab on the empty tank and lift it out.
- Take the new tank out of its bag and pull off the orange protective cap. Don't touch the electrical contacts.
- Slide the tank into its matching color slot and press down on the PUSH mark until it clicks. The tank's red lamp lights up.
- Close the scanning unit. The printer cleans the head briefly before it's ready.
Which Other Printers Use PGI-225 and CLI-226?
The PIXMA iP4820 and iP4920, the MG5120, MG5220, MG5320, MG6120 and MG8120, and the MX712 and MX892. The MG6120 and MG8120 also take a CLI-226 gray tank.
What PIXMA MX882 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Canon's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
What does error B200 mean?
B200 is a print head fault, usually a voltage problem or a head that has overheated after printing with an empty or dried tank. Turn the printer off, unplug it for ten minutes, then reseat the print head and tanks. If it comes back, the print head needs replacing, and on a printer this age that often costs more than it's worth.
What does error U052 mean?
U052 means the printer can't recognize the print head. Lift the head's locking lever, take the head out, check its contacts for dried ink, then reinstall it and lock the lever.
What does error 5100 mean?
The carriage is blocked. Look for jammed paper, a tank that isn't clicked down or packing material, then turn the printer off and on.
Why does it say the ink level can't be detected?
Refilled and some remanufactured tanks report no ink level. When the warning appears, press and hold Stop/Reset for at least five seconds to keep printing. This turns off ink-level detection for that color, so check print quality as you go.
