What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA MP160 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MP160 uses two cartridges: a PG-40 black and a CL-41 color. The high-capacity PG-50 and CL-51 fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured PG-50 Black, CL-51 Color, PG-40 Black and CL-41 Color, plus a PG-50 + CL-51 combo and a PG-40 + CL-41 combo.
The MP160 takes the same PG-40 and CL-41 cartridges as the PIXMA iP1600, MP150 and MP170. The PG-50 and CL-51 are the same shape with more ink, so you can mix standard and high-capacity cartridges. In Europe the same cartridges carry part numbers ending in B001 instead of B002.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Canon PIXMA MP160?
- With the printer on, open the paper output tray and lift the scanning unit until it locks. The cartridge holder moves to the center.
- Push the empty cartridge down until it clicks free, then take it out.
- Unpack the new cartridge and gently peel off the protective tape. Don't touch the gold contacts or the nozzles.
- Slide it into the holder, black on the right and color on the left, and push it up until it clicks.
- Close the scanning unit. If prints look off, run Print Head Alignment.
Which Other Printers Use PG-40 and CL-41?
The PIXMA MP150, MP170, MP180, MP450, MP460, MX300, MX310, iP2200, iP6210D, iP6220D, iP6310D and the iP1600, which we list with PG-40 and CL-41 only. Canon's FAX-JX200 and JX210P take the PG-50 black.
What PIXMA MP160 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Canon's support pages, Trusted Reviews and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Can I use PG-50 and CL-51 instead of PG-40 and CL-41?
Yes. They're high-capacity versions of the same cartridges, and LDProducts, InkTechnologies and Quill list them for the MP160.
It warns that ink is low or out after I put in a new cartridge.
Refilled and remanufactured cartridges don't report ink levels the way a new Canon one does. On most Canon printers of this type, holding the Stop/Reset button for five seconds or more turns off ink-level detection for that cartridge, and printing continues.
The display shows an E and a number.
The MP160's one-digit display shows errors as codes. Turn the printer off and on, reseat both cartridges and check for jammed paper. If the code returns, look it up in the manual for your printer.
Is there a driver for current Windows or Mac?
Canon has retired the MP160. Its support page shows no downloadable drivers and says updates are no longer made.
PIXMA MP160 quirks worth knowing
- Canon rated it at up to 22 pages a minute in black and 17 in color, but those aren't ISO speeds. A borderless 4x6 takes about 52 seconds.
- There's no color screen and no memory card slot: just a one-digit LED copy counter and status lights. Trusted Reviews named both as drawbacks.
- It prints two-sided only by hand, and there's no document feeder, so scanning is flatbed only.
- Paper loads from a rear paper support, and it weighs about 14 pounds.
