What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA MX432 Use?

Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MX432 uses a PG-240 black and a CL-241 tri-color cartridge. The high-yield PG-240XL, the extra-high-yield PG-240XXL and the CL-241XL fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured PG-240XL Black, PG-240XXL Black, CL-241XL Color and a PG-240XL + CL-241XL 2-pack.

The MX432 is the U.S. model of Canon's MX430 series (the MX439 is its twin and takes the same ink). It does not take PG-210/CL-211, the cartridges used by the older MX340 and MX420. Overseas versions of this printer (MX434, MX435, MX436, MX431) use region-coded cartridges such as PG-540/CL-541 that won't work in a U.S. MX432.

What Ink Cartridges Does the Canon PIXMA MX432 Take?

Cartridge Canon part no. Approx. yield Castle Ink option
PG-240 Black 5207B001 ~180 pages —
PG-240XL Black (high yield) 5206B001 ~300 pages Remanufactured PG-240XL, $21.95
PG-240XXL Black (extra high yield) 5204B001 ~600 pages Remanufactured PG-240XXL, $24.99
CL-241 Tri-Color 5209B001 ~180 pages —
CL-241XL Tri-Color (high yield) 5208B001 ~400 pages Remanufactured CL-241XL, $25.95

Yields are Canon's ISO/IEC 24711 figures for PG-240/CL-241 (Canon publishes them on its MG3522 yield sheet, which uses the same cartridges). Both cartridges must be installed for the printer to work. Canon's Community support team and Staples' MX432 supplies page both list the PG-240/CL-241 family for this printer.

Is the XL (or XXL) Ink Worth It?

Yes, especially for black. On October 26, 2026, Staples listed Canon's PG-240 at $27.99 (about 15.5¢ a page), the PG-240XL at $33.00 (11¢), the PG-240XXL at $47.99 (8¢) and the CL-241XL at $49.99 (12.5¢). Our remanufactured PG-240XL is $21.95 (about 7.3¢ a page), the PG-240XXL $24.99 (about 4.2¢) and the CL-241XL $25.95 (about 6.5¢). If you print mostly black text, the XXL is the cheapest way to run this printer: it holds over three times the ink of a standard PG-240.

Will Remanufactured Cartridges Work?

Yes. Canon's FINE cartridges have the print head built in, and the MX432 doesn't use HP-style dynamic security. A refilled or remanufactured cartridge may not report its ink level accurately, so you may need to dismiss a low-ink message. If the printer says a cartridge isn't recognized, take it out, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth and reseat it until it clicks.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Canon PIXMA MX432?

  1. Turn the printer on and open the front cover. On this FastFront model the cartridges are reached from the front; wait for the cartridge holder to stop moving.
  2. Release the empty cartridge and lift it out.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and peel off the orange protective tape. Don't touch the copper contacts or the nozzles.
  4. Insert it in the correct slot (color on the left, black on the right) and press it in until it locks.
  5. Close the cover and let the printer finish its automatic cleaning. Run a print head alignment if lines look ragged.

What PIXMA MX432 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Canon's support community, retailer Q&A and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Why does my MX432 reject a new cartridge?

It only takes PG-240, PG-240XL, PG-240XXL and CL-241/CL-241XL. A PG-210, PG-245 or overseas PG-540 cartridge will bring up an error. If a correct cartridge is still rejected after reseating and cleaning the contacts, Canon says the printer needs service.

What does error 5100 mean?

The cartridge holder can't move. Check for packing tape, jammed paper or a cartridge that isn't seated, then turn the printer off and on. If it comes back, it needs service.

Which driver do I install on a new computer?

Canon's "MX430 series MP Drivers." Canon has retired the MX432, so there are no new drivers; Windows drivers generally still work, but current Macs may not be supported.

Does it print two-sided automatically?

No. Two-sided printing is manual, and the manual-duplex option is only in the Windows driver.

Can I print with just the black cartridge?

No. Both cartridges must be installed, even if you only print in black.

PIXMA MX432 quirks worth knowing

  • Wi-Fi and AirPrint are built in, but there's no Ethernet port.
  • Paper loads in a 100-sheet rear feeder.
  • Canon rated it at 9.7 ISO pages a minute in black and 5.5 in color; PCWorld measured about 6.5 pages a minute on text.
