Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 uses four HP 940 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield HP 940XL versions are rated for about 2,200 pages (black) and 1,400 pages (each color). Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 940XL Black, 940XL Cyan, 940XL Magenta and 940XL Yellow.

Every version takes the same ink: the base 8000 (A809a), the 8000 Wireless (A809n) and the 8000 Enterprise (A811). Unlike the OfficeJet Pro 8500A, which uses the same cartridges, the 8000 is a print-only machine with no scanner or fax.

Is 940XL Worth It?

Yes. The 940XL black prints more than twice as many pages as the standard 940 for far less than twice the price. Original HP 940XL black was listed at $56.99 at 4inkjets on October 12, 2026 and was backordered. Our remanufactured 940XL black is $11.99 and each color $10.99, about half a cent a page for black and under 1¢ per color cartridge, or $41.99 for all four in the 940XL 4-pack. For a busy office printer that is one of the lowest running costs of any cartridge model.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 8000?

  1. With the printer on, open the ink cartridge cover on the front.
  2. Grip the empty cartridge between thumb and forefinger and pull it firmly toward you.
  3. Unpack the new 940 or 940XL cartridge.
  4. Align it with the slot of the matching color, insert it and press firmly so it makes contact.
  5. Close the cover. Install new cartridges right after unpacking, and don't leave a slot empty.

Which Other Printers Use HP 940?

The OfficeJet Pro 8500A, 8500A Plus and 8500A Premium, and the original OfficeJet Pro 8500, 8500 Wireless and 8500 Premier. Its successor, the OfficeJet Pro 8100, uses HP 950/951 instead.

What OfficeJet Pro 8000 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Why are the power and color cartridge lights blinking?

That pattern means the printer thinks a cartridge is faulty or needs attention. Reseat the flagged cartridge and wipe its contacts. If brand-new cartridges are still rejected, the printhead or the printer's board is the likelier cause. See printer says ink cartridge not recognized.

How many printheads does it use?

Two: one for black and yellow (C4900A) and one for cyan and magenta (C4901A). They sit under the four ink cartridges and last far longer than the ink.

Does the 8000 Wireless use different ink?

No. The 8000, 8000 Wireless and 8000 Enterprise all take HP 940 and 940XL.

How much can it print in a month?

HP rates it for up to 15,000 pages a month.

Can I leave an unpacked cartridge out of the printer?

HP's manual says to install a cartridge right after unpacking it and not to leave cartridges out of the printer for long periods, since the ink can dry.

OfficeJet Pro 8000 quirks worth knowing

  • It is print-only. If you need scan, copy or fax, the 8500A uses the same ink.
  • There is no display, only status lights and Power, Cancel and Resume buttons.
  • The Wireless model supports 802.11b/g only, and the Enterprise model has no Wi-Fi at all.
  • Pigment inks give sharp, water-resistant text, but reviewers found its photos slow and a little warm.
