How to Replace Ink in the HP Photosmart C4280

  1. Power on the printer and wait for it to be idle.
  2. Open the cartridge access door — the carriage will move to the right side.
  3. Press down on the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it out.
  4. Unwrap the new cartridge and pull off the protective tape — do not touch the copper contacts.
  5. Slide the cartridge into the correct slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks, then close the door.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge Problem" or "Print Cartridge Missing" error: Remove both cartridges, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, and reinsert firmly until they click.

Streaky or faded prints: Run HP Solution Center > Printer Toolbox > Clean Print Cartridges. Repeat up to three times if needed.

Alignment issues: After installing a new cartridge, print an alignment page from the printer's setup menu to restore sharp text and color registration.

Carriage stalls: Unplug the printer for 30 seconds, then plug it back in to reset the carriage motor — a common fix for older Photosmart models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will compatible HP 74XL / 75XL cartridges void my printer warranty?

No. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits manufacturers from voiding your warranty for using third-party ink, as long as the ink itself didn't cause damage.

How are page yields calculated?

Yields follow the ISO/IEC 24711 standard at 5% page coverage. Photo printing will use ink faster than text and graphics.

What other printers use HP 74 / 75 ink?

The HP DeskJet D4260, D4360, D4380, OfficeJet J5750, J5780, J6480, and Photosmart C4240, C4385, C4480, C4580, C4780, C5280, C5580, and D5360 all share this cartridge family.

Should I buy standard or XL?

HP 74XL and 75XL deliver roughly three times the pages of the standard versions for only a modest price increase, making the XL the better value for nearly every user.

My C4280 is over a decade old — is it still worth re-inking?

Yes, if the printer still prints cleanly. Castle Ink's compatible HP 74XL / 75XL 2-pack costs far less than a new printer, and the C4280 remains a capable photo all-in-one for casual use.
