What Toner Does the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdn Use?
Last Updated:Shopping for this printer? See all HP 210X Toner Cartridges – W2100X–W2103X 4-Pack → Ships same day by 4 PM ET, 1-year guarantee.
Quick answer: The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdn uses four HP 210A (standard) or HP 210X (high-yield) toner cartridges in black, cyan, yellow and magenta, part numbers W2100A–W2103A and W2100X–W2103X. The HP+ 4301fdne uses the same cartridges. From Castle Ink, the option is our compatible HP 210X 4-pack with chips, rated at about 7,500 black pages and about 5,500 pages per color. We don't sell 210A or single 210X cartridges.
Chip warning for the 4301fdn: "Non-HP Chip Detected" stops printing. HP's product page says this printer "uses dynamic security measures to block cartridges using a non-HP chip," and Staples' listing adds that firmware updates keep those measures in place. The message cannot be cleared by pressing OK. Our 210X cartridges carry new aftermarket chips, so we can't promise a future HP update won't block them. Before you install them, confirm the model is a 4301fdn, not a 4301fdne, and change the printer's firmware updates to notify-first. If we sold you a cartridge the printer refuses, contact us within the 1-year return window for a replacement or refund.

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdn
| Pillar (weight) | Score | What it is based on |
|---|---|---|
| Owner ratings (28%) | 81 | 4.05★ average across 228 ratings at HP.com (4.1, 110 ratings) and Quill (4.0, 118 ratings) |
| Expert reviews (20%) | 80 | PCMag (4301fdw) 4.0/5 |
| Cost per page (18%) | 80 | About 1.7¢ per rated page across the set with our compatible 210X 4-pack with chips ($399.95 for 7,500 black + 3 × 5,500 color pages). Docked because dynamic security and firmware updates can reject toner without HP's chip. |
| Reliability (18%) | 78 | Most-reported problems: Scan and Copy buttons stopping after one use, scanner crashes, a document feeder that stopped feeding, and occasional network connection drops |
| Features (11%) | 84 | Print, copy, scan, fax, 50-sheet document feeder with single-pass two-sided scanning, auto two-sided printing, Ethernet, 4.3-inch touchscreen, fast (35 ppm). No Wi-Fi. |
| Value (5%) | 74 | Running cost and owner satisfaction against a street price of $659.99 (Staples) to $759 (Quill) |
Still sold new. In October 2026 Staples listed the 4301fdn at $659.99, Micro Center at $709.99 and Quill at $759. The HP+ 4301fdne uses the same toner but requires Original HP cartridges once HP+ is activated.

If you own the HP+ 4301fdne: HP+ ties the printer to Original HP toner for its whole life once it is activated. HP's FAQ says HP+ requires "use of Original HP Ink for the lifetime of the printer." Compatible and remanufactured 210 cartridges are refused on an activated fdne. HP lets you skip HP+ at setup, so on a new 4301fdne you can still choose. Once it is on, buy genuine.
The same HP 210A / 210X cartridges fit the MFP 4301fdw, the MFP 4301dw, and the single-function 4201dw and 4201dn, plus their HP+ "e" versions. For the update setting, read how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink.
The 4301fdn is the wired-only version of HP's 4301 color laser all-in-one. It prints, copies, scans and faxes at up to 35 pages a minute, with a 50-sheet document feeder, two-sided printing and a 4.3-inch color touchscreen, but no Wi-Fi.
Do not confuse HP 210A with HP 220A, the cartridge HP lists for the 4302 models, or with HP 414A, which fits the older M479fdn.

How to Replace the Toner in the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdn
- Open the front door. On the 4301fdn it doubles as Tray 1, the 50-sheet multipurpose tray, so take out any paper loaded there first. You don't need to lift the scanner.
- Pull the toner drawer out by its blue handle.
- Lift the empty cartridge straight up and out of the drawer.
- Unpack the new cartridge using the release tab on the packaging, then rock it end to end to spread the toner. Don't touch the drum on the bottom.
- Place it in the drawer slot whose color label matches the cartridge.
- Push the drawer back in, close the front door, and check the Supplies screen on the touchscreen to confirm all four levels read.
Troubleshooting Tips
Cartridge refused or "Non-HP Chip Detected": Reseat the cartridge, make sure the packaging is off, and restart. If the message stays, it is dynamic security, and OK won't clear it. Look at whether the printer updated its firmware recently, and if the cartridge came from us, call us.
Scan or copy stops working: A few owners on HP.com report the Scan and Copy buttons going dead after one use, or the scanner crashing mid-job. Power the printer off at the switch for a minute, then check HP's support site for a newer firmware or scan driver. Keep in mind that a firmware update can also change how the printer treats non-HP chips.
Faded or streaked color: Take out the cartridge for the affected color, rock it, and print a cleaning page. If the fault stays with one color, replace that cartridge. Our guide to laser printer streaks and lines has more.
What 4301fdn owners ask
These come from HP's Q&A page and owner reviews of the 4301fdn, rewritten in our words.
Can I connect the 4301fdn to Wi-Fi?
No. It connects by Gigabit Ethernet or USB only. The 4301fdw is the wireless version. Several reviewers bought the fdn by mistake, and one says the seller refused an exchange, so check the letters before you order.
Does it scan both sides of a page in one pass?
Yes. HP's answer on its Q&A page is that the 4301fdn has a document feeder with single-pass two-sided scanning. HP lists scan resolution up to 600 x 600 dpi.
Why does HP say it uses "TerraJet" cartridges?
TerraJet is HP's name for the toner in its 210 cartridges. It is still laser toner in a cartridge, not ink.
How good is the fax?
It is a standard 33.6 Kbps fax with memory for up to 500 pages and 100 speed dials, connected through the RJ-11 phone port.
Can I use compatible toner in a 4301fdn that isn't an "e" model?
Possibly, but without a guarantee. The fdn has dynamic security, and HP says firmware updates can block cartridges with non-HP chips, including ones that are printing fine today.
4301fdn quirks worth knowing
- HP.com's reviews for the 4301fdn average 4.1 stars, lower than the 4.4 HP shows for the Wi-Fi 4301fdw. Several of the low ratings are about the missing Wi-Fi rather than print quality.
- Prices varied by about $100 in October 2026: Staples had it at $659.99, Micro Center at $709.99 and Quill at $759.
- Unlike the 4201 printers with their dial, the 4301fdn has a 4.3-inch color touchscreen that tilts up for easier viewing.
- Paper capacity is a 250-sheet tray plus the 50-sheet Tray 1, up to legal size, with an optional third tray.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the 4301fdn and 4301fdw take the same toner?
Yes. Both use HP 210A and 210X. The fdw adds Wi-Fi.
Will compatible toner work in a 4301fdne?
No. Once HP+ is activated, the printer takes only Original HP toner for life.
Will compatible toner void my HP warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP can't void your warranty just because you used third-party toner. HP+ on the fdne is a separate agreement you accept at setup.
