What Toner Does the HP LaserJet 3200 Use?

Quick answer: The HP LaserJet 3200 all-in-one (including the 3200m and 3200se) uses the HP 92A black toner cartridge (C4092A), rated for about 2,500 pages. It is the same cartridge as the HP LaserJet 1100. HP never made a high-yield version of the 92A.

It does not take HP 15A or 15X (C7115A/C7115X). Those belong to the later LaserJet 3300-series all-in-ones and the LaserJet 1000/1200/1220, and the similar model numbers are the usual cause of the mix-up. Castle Ink sells a compatible 92A for the 3200.

What Toner Does the HP LaserJet 3200 Take?

Cartridge HP part no. Approx. yield (ISO) Castle Ink option
HP 92A Black C4092A ~2,500 pages Castle Ink 92A, $35.95

The yield is HP's ISO/IEC 19752 figure, as listed by CDW. The drum is built into the cartridge, so there is no separate drum to buy.

Can You Still Buy Original HP 92A?

Barely. CDW lists the C4092A as discontinued by HP in July 2016. On October 25, 2026, 4inkjets still listed an Original HP 92A at $52.99, and sealed old stock turns up on eBay, but some of those cartridges carry date codes from the early 2000s. Toner that old can print gray backgrounds, and eBay buyers report exactly that. Our compatible 92A is $35.95, about 1.4¢ a page at the rated yield.

Will a Compatible 92A Work in the 3200?

Yes. The LaserJet 3200 dates from 2000, long before HP added cartridge chips and dynamic security, and compatible and remanufactured 92A cartridges have been sold for it for years. The main complaint about aftermarket 92A is cartridges falling short of the 2,500-page rating, so buy from a seller that stands behind its yield.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the HP LaserJet 3200?

  1. Open the print-cartridge door.
  2. Pull the old cartridge out by its handle.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge, touching only the plastic body, and remove the sealing tape.
  4. Gently rock the cartridge side to side to spread the toner.
  5. Slide it into the guides and press it firmly into place.
  6. Close the cartridge door and print a test page.

Which Other Printers Use HP 92A?

CDW lists the HP LaserJet 1100 series and the LaserJet 3200 series (3200, 3200m and 3200se) for the C4092A.

What LaserJet 3200 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer listings, HP's user guide and owner feedback, answered in our words.

Does the LaserJet 3200 take HP 15A or 15X?

No. It uses HP 92A (C4092A), about 2,500 pages. HP 15A/15X are for the LaserJet 3300-series all-in-ones and the 1000/1200/1220.

Is there a high-yield 92A?

No. Retailers list only the standard C4092A, rated at about 2,500 pages.

How does it connect to a computer? Can it go on a network?

By USB or parallel cable. It has no network port; HP supported networking through an external JetDirect print server.

Prints look faded. What should I try first?

Take the cartridge out, rock it gently side to side five or six times to spread the toner, put it back and print a test page.

LaserJet 3200 quirks worth knowing

  • It shares its cartridge with the LaserJet 1100 printer, so 1100 toner fits.
  • A front paper-path door switches output between the top bin and a straight-through front slot, which helps with envelopes and heavy paper.
  • It prints up to 9 pages a minute, with a 30-sheet document feeder and a 125-sheet tray.
  • On Linux, PC faxing doesn't work and USB needs the old HPOJ driver, according to the OpenPrinting database.
