Chips, Printer Messages & Installation
Installing: open the front cover and slide out the drum unit. Push down the lock lever on the empty toner of the matching color and lift it out, then rock the new cartridge gently, remove its protective cover and click it into the same slot. Clean each corona wire by sliding the green tab back and forth, then slide the drum unit back in.
Toner messages: this compatible cartridge carries its own chip. If the printer still asks for toner, take the cartridge out and click it in firmly. Keeping automatic firmware updates off avoids most chip problems.
Toner vs. drum: these are toner cartridges only. The DR229CL drum unit is a separate part that lasts through several sets of toner.

Original (OEM) toner is new from the printer brand and costs the most. Compatible toner, like this cartridge, is newly manufactured by a third party to the original's size, chip and page-yield specifications, so it drops into the same slot at a much lower price.
