What Toner Does the Brother MFC-L3780CDW Use?

Quick answer: The Brother MFC-L3780CDW uses the TN229 toner family in four colors — black, cyan, magenta and yellow — with TN229XL and TN229XXL high-yield versions available. It also uses a separate DR229CL imaging drum, which is replaced far less often than the toner.

Toner and drum are two different parts on this machine. That is the single most common source of confusion, and the most common unexpected cost.

Brother MFC-L3780CDW supplies at a glance

Consumable Part Number Black Yield Color Yield (each)
Toner (standard) TN229BK / C / M / Y 1,500 pages 1,200 pages
Toner (high yield) TN229XL 3,000 pages 2,300 pages
Toner (super high yield) TN229XXL 4,500 pages 4,000 pages
Imaging drum DR229CL ~20,000 pages (more on long jobs)

Yields are ISO/IEC 19798. Brother lists the in-box starter set for this model as roughly 2,300 pages black and 1,200 pages per color — generous by starter-cartridge standards, though worth checking against your own packaging.

Which yield should you buy?

The MFC-L3780CDW is one of the few models in this family where the XXL is offered, and on a 31 ppm office multifunction it is usually the right call. Going from TN229 to TN229XXL triples the black yield and more than triples color, for nowhere near triple the price.

Buy standard TN229 only if the machine is very lightly used, or if you want to spread the cost of four colors rather than buying a full high-yield set at once.

Don't forget the DR229CL drum

Because the drum is separate, "Replace Drum Soon" on the display is not a request for toner. You will typically replace toner several times before the drum reaches its ~20,000-page life. After fitting a new drum you must reset the drum counter from the control panel, or the warning keeps returning.

The upside of a separate drum is diagnostic: if print quality degrades, you can work out whether the toner or the drum is responsible instead of replacing an expensive combined cartridge and hoping.

Castle Ink recommendation

Castle Ink stocks compatible TN229 toner as complete four-color sets, which is how most people buy for a color laser:

How to replace the toner

  1. Open the front cover and let the machine finish any cooling cycle.
  2. Pull out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly as one piece, using the green handle.
  3. Push down the green lock lever beside the color you are replacing and lift that toner cartridge out of the drum.
  4. Unbox the new cartridge, rock it gently side to side five or six times, and remove the protective cover.
  5. Slide it into the matching slot in the drum unit until it clicks and the lever lifts on its own. The slots are color-keyed — do not force one.
  6. Clean each of the four corona wires by sliding the green tabs left and right several times, then return every tab to its home position.
  7. Reinstall the assembly and close the front cover.

Troubleshooting an MFC-L3780CDW

  • Vertical streaks or a repeating colored line. Clean the corona wires with the green sliders first — a tab left out of its home position is a very common cause. If it persists, suspect the drum rather than the toner.
  • Color registration drifting or washed-out color. Run the machine's color calibration and registration routines from the control panel. This matters more on a four-color laser than people expect.
  • "Replace Toner" on a cartridge that still feels heavy. Brother counts pages rather than weighing toner. Reseating sometimes clears a premature warning, and Continue Mode will keep the machine printing past the empty message.
  • "Replace Drum Soon." That is the DR229CL, not the toner — and remember to reset the counter after fitting one.
  • Third-party toner and firmware. In March 2025 some users alleged that a Brother firmware update degraded behavior with third-party toner, particularly around color calibration. Brother publicly denied it, stating that its firmware updates do not block third-party ink and toner. The claim was never independently established. Many owners still choose to disable automatic firmware updates as a precaution — a reasonable hedge rather than a proven necessity.

Which printers use TN229 toner?

  • HL-L3220CDW, HL-L3280CDW, HL-L3295CDW, HL-L3300CDW
  • HL-L8245CDW, MFC-L8395CDW
  • MFC-L3720CDW, MFC-L3765CDW, MFC-L3780CDW

All of these also share the DR229CL drum. One caveat: TN229XXL is not offered for every model in the family — the MFC-L3780CDW is one that does take it, but the HL-L3280CDW, for example, does not. Check your model before ordering XXL.

Genuine Brother vs compatible TN229

There is no HP+-style enrollment lock here and no subscription requirement. Brother's EcoPro plan is optional.

What you are paying for in a good compatible is a correctly manufactured chip and reset gear, the right toner particle size, and an even fill across all four colors. Color lasers are less forgiving than mono: a poor cyan shows up as a color cast on every page, not just a faint one. Buying a matched four-cartridge set from one supplier gives more consistent results than mixing brands.

About the Brother MFC-L3780CDW itself

The MFC-L3780CDW is a color laser multifunction: print, copy, scan and fax. It runs at 31 pages per minute in both mono and color, duplexes automatically by default, and has a 50-sheet automatic document feeder with single-pass duplex scanning. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), Wi-Fi Direct, USB and an NFC badge reader.

Announced in October 2023, it is a current model with full support and readily available supplies.

FAQ

What toner does the Brother MFC-L3780CDW use?

TN229 standard, TN229XL high-yield or TN229XXL super-high-yield toner in black, cyan, magenta and yellow, plus a DR229CL drum unit.

Is the drum included with the toner?

No. The DR229CL is a separate part rated for around 20,000 pages, so you will replace toner several times before you need one.

Can I use TN227 or TN223 toner instead?

No. Those belong to the previous HL-L3210/L3270 generation. The MFC-L3780CDW uses the TN229 family only.

How many pages does TN229XXL print?

About 4,500 pages black and 4,000 pages per color, at ISO coverage.

Does Brother firmware block third-party toner?

Brother says it does not. Allegations to that effect in early 2025 were denied by Brother and never independently corroborated. Disabling automatic firmware updates is a common precaution among owners who use compatibles.

Why is my color output off after changing toner?

Run color calibration and registration from the control panel, and check that all four corona-wire sliders are back in their home positions.
